Monuments in India built by women; some are UNESCO Heritage Sites

Women are one of the most powerful creations of God. It’s a fact that Indian women have fought their way to success in every field proving they are no less than their male counterparts. Indian women’s legacy can be seen in several architecture including grand forts, old temples, and awe-inspiring tombs, among others. There are some iconic monuments in India which have been built by women.

These monuments show the power women held in the bygone eras while playing the roles of queens, wives and noble women. Here are five iconic historical monuments built by the women of India:

Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi

It might come as a surprise for many that the famous attraction in Delhi was actually commissioned by a woman. Yes, the famous Humayun’s Tomb was actually commissioned by Humayun’s first wife, Bega Begum (also known as Haji Begum). This 16th century tomb is a true engineering marvel and was the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent.

Rani ki Vav (Queen’s Stepwell), Gujarat

Not many must be aware of the fact that this stunning UNESCO Heritage Site was commissioned by Queen Udayamati in the 11th century. Rani ki Vav today stands as a reminder of the power of a woman in love. This heritage site in Patan, Gujarat was built in memory of her husband, Bhima I of the Chaulukya kingdom. It is an architectural wonder that is designed as an inverted temple. The stepwell has seven levels of panels depicting gods, goddesses, and other celestial beings.

Virupaksha Temple, Karnataka

The famous Virupaksha Temple was commissioned by Queen Lokamahadevi to commemorate her husband Vikramaditya II’s victory over the Pallavas. This 8th century temple in Pattadakal is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Women in the Chalukya time had a big role to play in the world of art and architecture.

Zeenat-ul-Masajid, Delhi


Zeenat-ul-Masajid, popularly known as Ghata Masjid, was commissioned by Zinat-un-Nissa, daughter of Mughal king Aurangzeb. This 1707 Masjid in Old Delhi is a living example of Mughal architecture. The mosque is built in red sandstone. The white marbles only add to its overall aesthetic beauty.

Mirjan Fort, Karnataka

A lesser-known gem in India, Mirjan Fort was commissioned by Queen Chennabhairadevi. The fierce woman was famous as the "Pepper Queen of India" and ruled Karnataka in the 16th century. The fort was built to defend the queen's territory against enemy kingdoms and foreign invaders.
