Delhi’s 5 must-visit Ram Leela maidans for an epic Dussehra celebration

The iconic festival of Navratri goes on for 9 days mostly, and on the 10th day falls Dussehra, the triumph of good over evil. During this festival, Ram Leela takes place at different locations where they re-enact significant events of Lord Ram’s life from his birth to his exile to the most significant day that marks the end of Ram Leela when Lord Ram kills Ravan. Ram Leela’s are core to every child’s memory and hold great cultural and religious significance.

Let’s look at some Ram Leela maidans you must visit in Delhi:

Lal Qila Maidan (Red Fort grounds)

The most iconic and most famous Ram Leela event that brings the beautiful epic of Ramayana to life. The Ram Leela is named after the sons of Lord Ram, Luv and Kush. A unique feature of this Ram Leela is that it focuses on the roles of Luv and Kush, their upbringing under Goddess Sita’s guidance. Each scene will evoke various emotions in you and instill in you the values of righteousness and devotion. The Luv Kush Ramlila is held every year at the Red Fort grounds.

Old Rajinder Nagar

Did you know Shah Rukh Khan once acted in Ram Leela? Yes, you read that right, Shah Rukh Khan; the famous Bollywood actor used to act in the Ram Leela held here in Rajinder Nagar. The epic tale of Ramayana comes to life here with people coming from various parts of Delhi to participate in the organization of the event, and many come here to attend it. The Ram Leela held here in Old Rajinder Nagar is organized by the Rajinder Nagar Arts Club Committee. The most stunning fact is that the majority of the actors and backstage crew contribute to the Ram Leela without any fees and just participate in it with pure love in their hearts. The elaborate costumes, music, and stage designs will definitely keep you captivated.

Ramlila Maidan, Delhi

Ram Leela happens each year here in the Ramlila Maidan which is located near New Delhi Railway Station. The Ram Leela held here is frequently visited by the members of the Nehru-Gandhi family, and this location also holds great prominence as it has been used for major political rallies, protests, and entertainment events. The re-enactment of Ramayana here is done with great devotion and love, and the vast ground helps in hosting hundreds of people who come to witness the tale of the epic Ramayana.

Punjabi Bagh

The beautiful reenactment of the epic tale of Ramayana is held here every year. The Ram Leela is held at the Ramlila Maidan here, which is organized by the prestigious Shree Ramlila Committee Punjabi Bagh. One can easily reach here by metro by getting off at the Punjabi Bagh West metro station or through cars and other modes. Other than the stunning stage performance, a large fair/mela is also held here with different amusement rides and food stalls.

Dwarka

The Dwarka Sri Ramlila Society organizes Ram Leela each year here, and it is a dramatic reenactment of the tale of Ramayana, the ten-day battle between Lord Ram and Ravan, and concludes on the festival of Vijayadashami day that commemorates the victory of Lord Ram over demon king Ravana. The actors are taken for a procession before the final act through the town, which ends at a mela ground or town square, where the enactment of the final battle takes place.
