August Escape: Top Hill Stations in Sri Lanka for a Perfect Mountain Getaway

Sri Lanka is a country known worldwide for its natural beauty, scenic beaches, vibrant wildlife and ancient temples. But not many must be aware of the fact that Sri Lanka is also blessed with some incredible hill stations which are gorgeous beyond words!

For those looking for a refreshing cool escape, Sri Lanka has some terrific hill stations offering serene retreats which are packed with natural beauty. They have colonial charm as well. On this note, have a look at five hill stations you absolutely must visit on your next trip to Sri Lanka.

2/6

Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya, also known as The “Little England” of Sri Lanka, is a beautiful hill station set at an altitude of 1,868 meters. The scenic hill station is counted among the most famous hill stations in Sri Lanka. It is called “Little England” because of all colonial-era bungalows, gardens, and cool climate. Nuwara Eliya offers a glimpse into a bygone era. Visitors here can enjoy a stroll through the pretty Victoria Park or just opt for a boat ride on Gregory Lake.

3/6

Ella

Ella, set at an altitude of about 1,041 meters, is a small but gorgeous hill town in Sri Lanka. It is one of the favourite spots among backpackers, trekkers and nature enthusiasts. What sets this place apart from other destinations is the panoramic views of lush valleys and misty mountains. One of the prime highlights of Ella’s is the trek to Ella Rock. It is every hiker’s dream destination, offering sweeping views of the hills nearby and tea plantations. When here, you cannot miss out on visiting the Nine Arches Bridge. It is an iconic colonial railway bridge surrounded by dense jungle.

4/6

Haputale

Now this is the place where tea meets clouds, like literally! Haputale is a hidden gem in Sri Lanka which offers the most spectacular views of the southern plains. It is known for Lipton’s Seat. This is where tea baron Sir Thomas Lipton used to survey his tea empire. The views are simply gorgeous from here and are often covered in mist. Nature lovers will fall in love with this hill station because of its proximity to the Horton Plains and the Buduruwagala rock temple.

5/6

Bandarawela

Bandarawela is another peaceful hill escape set around 1,230 meters above sea level. This quiet town serves as a gateway to Sri Lanka’s southern hill country and is less touristy compared to other hill stations in the country. The town is also ideal for people who wish to explore off-the-beaten-path regions or simply enjoy a slower pace of life. Some of the nearby attractions include the Diyaluma Falls, which also happens to be the second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, and the charming town of Welimada.

6/6

Adam's Peak

Head to Adam’s Peak if you are not looking for a traditional hill station. Also known as Sri Pada, the place holds spiritual and natural significance as it is among the highest peaks in Sri Lanka. Though the climb is challenging, it offers rewarding experiences. The sunrise views from here are dreamy. The place is also known for offering a glimpse of the sacred “footprint” rock, which is revered by all. Surrounding the peak are dense forests, waterfalls, and tea estates, making the region a captivating destination.
