8 coolest places in India for that perfect summer vacation

Temperatures are gradually rising in the plains, and very soon heat waves will be dominating the news. And when the plains of India begin to simmer under the relentless summer sun, going to cooler places seems to be the logical thing to do. Also, the country offers plenty of cool escapes tucked away in mountains, forests, and misty valleys that picking a place to unwind is fun. From Himalayan landscapes to tea-scented hill stations in the south, summer travel in India is less about surviving the heat and more about discovering places where the air feels lighter to cool the senses. Here are eight destinations across India that make excellent summer getaways.

2/9

Ladakh

Summer is when Ladakh truly comes alive. After months of harsh winter isolation, the high-altitude desert opens up between May and September, revealing stark landscapes, turquoise lakes, and monasteries perched dramatically on rocky cliffs. Roads such as the Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh highways become accessible, turning the journey itself into a spectacular adventure. Pangong Lake and Nubra Valley remain major highlights, while monasteries like Hemis and Thiksey offer a glimpse into Ladakh’s deep Buddhist culture. The cool mountain air and vast silence make it one of India’s most unforgettable summer destinations.

3/9

Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

Tucked away in India’s far northeast, Tawang feels almost untouched by the rush of mainstream tourism. Surrounded by the eastern Himalayas, the town is famous for the majestic Tawang Monastery—one of the largest Buddhist monasteries in the world. Summer here is pleasantly cool, with clear skies revealing snow-dusted peaks and pristine alpine lakes like Madhuri Lake. The journey to Tawang itself, crossing the dramatic Sela Pass, adds to the experience. With its serene monasteries, colourful prayer flags, and dramatic landscapes, Tawang offers both beauty and quiet reflection.

4/9

Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh

Famous as “Little Tibet,” Spiti Valley is a high-altitude desert region known for its stark beauty and ancient monasteries. While it is generally considered to be part of the Himalayas, unlike other areas, Spiti is in a rain shadow region and hence is best visited during the summer months. The villages of Kaza, Kibber, and Langza are known for their breathtaking views of rugged mountains and vast barren valleys. The monasteries are perched atop hilltops, as is the famous Key Monastery, and the Chandratal Lake is known for its mesmerizing shades of blue.

5/9

Darjeeling, West Bengal

Darjeeling is definitely one of the country's traditional summer hill resorts. The town’s pleasant climate and colonial atmosphere, combined with its tea gardens, ensure its popularity with tourists. There is something magical in watching the sunrise over Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill, which is one thing that never seems to get old. Then the unforgettable Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also fondly known as the Toy Train that adds to the old-world charm. Its tea gardens, tea, and misty mountains further make Darjeeling a perfect place for that laid-back summer holiday.

6/9

Munnar, Kerala

If South is your preference, Munnar will offer you a completely different vibe. Situated in the Western Ghats range of Kerala, it's best known for its vast expanse of rolling tea gardens on the green hills. As for the weather, it remains pleasant even during the peak summer months. Tourists can visit Eravikulam National Park, home to the endangered species of mountain goats, or take a leisurely drive along the mountains, tea gardens, and waterfalls.

7/9

Coorg, Karnataka

Coorg is also known as Kodagu and is often referred to as the “Scotland of India.” Its uniqueness is all its own. Coorg is known for its coffee plantations and is a perfect getaway for people seeking refuge from the summer sun in southern India. One can visit the Abbey Falls, trek through the forest, or enjoy the views at Raja’s Seat. Coffee aficionados will love staying in homestays where the smell of freshly brewed coffee wafts through the air in the mornings.

8/9

Shillong, Meghalaya

Shillong is a lovely destination that promises a refreshing combination of nature and relaxed city life. With its location amidst pine forests and rolling hills, the capital city of Meghalaya experiences pleasant summer weather and is often cooled by breezy winds. The city is also close to popular tourist spots such as Umiam Lake, Elephant Falls, and the root bridges found in the nearby villages. Shillong is also home to a thriving culture, with active music and shopping scenes. These factors make it one of the most enjoyable summer getaways in the northeastern part of India.

9/9

Auli, Uttarakhand

Although it's primarily known as a winter ski destination, it transforms into a peaceful alpine retreat during summers. Set high in the Garhwal Himalayas, this is one place where one gets to witness the sweeping views of snow-capped peaks such as Nanda Devi. Meadows dotted with wildflowers replace the winter snow, while the cable car ride from Joshimath to Auli is another must-do activity that allows one to enjoy the breathtaking views of mountains, adding an extra dose of adventure to the journey.
