7 hill stations near Kerala for that much-needed winter break in December

December is back, and one of the best months to go for vacations. There are multiple reasons for this, like multiple holidays coming up, or just wanting to go on the Christmas and New Year getaway. Whatever your reasons are, there is no denying the fact that it’s one of the best times to escape to some of the best places in the country for that break.
Today, we are taking you to South India, where some of the places are just right with those cool breezes, misty mornings, and that unmistakable winter charm. These are hill stations around Kerala that come alive during the last month of the year. If you have also been planning for that much-needed refreshing break, here are some of the nearby getaways to check out.

2/8

Munnar

Munnar will always remain the classic winter escape for travellers from Kerala. In December, the temperature drops to a refreshing 10–15°C, covering the hills in a cool, crisp mist. Rolling tea plantations, the high-altitude meadows of Eravikulam National Park, and the lofty Anamudi Peak offer those postcard-perfect landscapes for quick escapes. Winter is again the ideal time for trekking, long drives, and soaking up sunrise views from Top Station. Even though it’s Kerala’s most popular high-altitude destination, Munnar still feels magical when the clouds sink into the valleys and the tea gardens glow in the soft winter sun.

3/8

Wayanad

Wayanad sits close to the Nilgiri biosphere, and is one of the best places that makes for a pleasantly cool December holiday. It has dense forests, waterfalls, ancient caves, and sprawling spice plantations offering the ideal setting for a peaceful winter break. Some of the key stops include Edakkal Caves, Banasura Sagar Dam, and Soochipara, whereas Wayanad’s mist-covered mornings and forest drives are the favourite things to do here. Also, the region’s wildlife sanctuaries remain active during winter, making it a great time for spotting animals along the fringes of the forests.

4/8

Vagamon

Vagamon is another quieter, less-touristy hill getaway. The temperature here remains cool throughout December, while the pine forests and rolling meadows give you the ideal misty, winter feel. Enjoy the long ridges of Vagamon, which are dotted with small lakes and cliffs, and are ideal for travellers looking for slow mornings and scenic walks. Vagamon Meadows, Thangalpara, and Pine Valley make lovely winter stops, especially if you want a calm break without the rush of crowds.

5/8

Ponmudi

Ponmudi is one of the easiest winter escapes for travellers from south Kerala. The hill station sits at around 1,100 m and offers narrow, winding roads, scenic viewpoints, and a refreshing climate in December. The misty peaks, lush forests, and tea estates offer a tranquil setting for a weekend winter getaway. Ponmudi is also known for trekking, especially the popular trail to Agasthyakoodam, which is one of the highest peaks in the Western Ghats.

6/8

Yercaud

Situated in the Shevaroy Hills, Yercaud is one of the serene hill stations that one can visit when in a dilemma to choose between options. Its cool December weather, lake views, and colonial-era bungalows make it an unexpectedly charming winter retreat. Yercaud Lake, Killiyur Falls, and Lady’s Seat viewpoint are some of the must-visit spots. And with its relatively lighter tourist rush, Yercaud is ideal for travellers who prefer a relaxed hill station experience without heavy crowds or steep temperatures.

7/8

Kodaikanal

Kodaikanal is one of the most beloved hill stations in South India, and December definitely adds an extra layer of charm. During this time, the temperature often dips below 10°C, filling the town with blankets of mist and chilly evenings perfect for long walks. From Coaker’s Walk and Pillar Rocks to the quiet trails around Kodai Lake, the town’s natural beauty coupled with cosy winter vibe is like getting more than you actually asked for. Its forests, waterfalls, and cloud-draped cliffs are special for all those who enjoy cooler weather.

8/8

Ooty

Ooty rests in the Nilgiri Hills and is easily accessible from Kerala via scenic mountain routes. December is that time of the year when this place brings in crisp weather, complemented with green landscapes, while the charm of its colonial-era architecture is always there. The botanical gardens, Ooty Lake, and Dodabetta Peak further always remain classic stops, where simple drives through the eucalyptus-lined roads feel special in winter.
