7 cool hill stations just a drive away from Chennai

Chennai, the city of Marina beaches, filter coffee, and architectural marvels, indeed has all the elements to keep people and visitors hooked. Yet, there are times when the heart longs for something different—cool breezes, rolling hills, and a quick escape from the city’s chaos. Luckily, there are plenty of surprises that are not too far from the city. Just a few hours’ drive from Chennai lie some refreshing hill stations, each with its own charm. These places are all about misty greenery, postcard-worthy views, and offer the much-needed break from honking horns. For anyone craving serenity, adventure, or simply some rest, these seven hill stations near Chennai tick all the boxes for an unforgettable getaway and timeless memories, making them perfect weekend retreats.

2/8

Yelagiri

Yelagiri, around 230 km from Chennai, is often overshadowed by the most popular alternatives like Ooty and Kodaikanal. However, this place has a charm that cannot be missed. With gentle hills, apple orchards, and the legendary Punganoor Lake, it’s perfect for a low-key weekend. Also, when here, trek up Swamimalai Hill for a 360-degree view that makes visitors feel like a tiny dot in a green universe.

3/8

Kodaikanal

This place is technically a bit farther from the city, but anybody planning a longer road trip, Kodaikanal is worth it. Famous for the star-shaped Kodaikanal Lake and misty cliffs, it’s a place where even doing nothing might not make anyone feel guilty. Don’t miss Coaker’s Walk at sunrise, where one gets to witness Mother Nature showing off.

4/8

Kotagiri

Tucked away in the Nilgiris, Kotagiri lies about 530 km from Chennai and is a paradise for tea lovers. With its sweeping tea estates and refreshing climate, the town feels like a living green canvas. Adventure seekers can explore trekking trails that link Kotagiri to other charming Nilgiri hill stations. Just don’t forget a raincoat, the weather here delights in adding sudden, dramatic twists.

5/8

Coonoor

Coonoor is smaller, quieter, and arguably more romantic. Eucalyptus-scented walks, misty mornings, and the iconic Nilgiri Mountain Railway puffing through hills like a scene from a vintage postcard, as some of the highlights of this place. Don’t skip Sim’s Park, which is a botanical playground with more than 1,000 species of plants.

6/8

Valparai

Valparai is another hidden gem in the Western Ghats. Known for its tea and coffee plantations, wildlife, and waterfalls, it’s less crowded than its Nilgiri neighbors. When here, don’t miss visiting the Monkey Falls and keep the camera ready, as elephants and leopards might occasionally make surprise appearances.

7/8

Horsley Hills

Though technically in Andhra Pradesh, Horsley Hills is another gem of a place that can be visited from Chennai and makes for a fun cross-state trip. Named after a British collector, Horsley Hills has a quirky old-world charm with winding roads, pine forests, and viewpoints that feel like secret postcards. Adventure seekers can try zip-lining or horse riding here.

8/8

Meghamalai

For something unique, head to Meghamalai, also known as the “High Wavy Mountains.” Situated a bit far from Chennai, it’s a misty paradise with cardamom plantations and hidden waterfalls, and is worth all the effort. Fewer tourists mean lesser hassle, plus, spotting a wild elephant is almost guaranteed if you’re lucky (and silent!).
