6 things that make Mussoorie the OG Queen of Hills

When it comes to hill stations in India, the competition is fierce. From the charm of Shimla to the serenity of Coorg, each one has its own magic. But like everyone has their own favourite, today we are vibing with Mussoorie, and giving you reasons to sound justified. You may agree to disagree, but one thing is for sure, Indian hill stations are just love, and every one has their own charm to be proud of. Cut to chase, why we think Mussoorie is the OG Queen of Hills. Perched at an altitude of about 6,500 ft in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal Himalayas, Mussoorie didn’t earn the title of “Queen of the Hills” just for fun. It’s a blend of colonial legacy, misty romance, literary heritage, and sheer mountain drama.
Here are six things that make Mussoorie one of the best in India’s hill station scene.

2/7

The Mall Road: Where time stands still

Most hill stations has a Mall Road. But Mussoorie’s Mall Road is the blueprint. It’s got everything: old British-era lamp posts, creaky wooden benches, softy cones, sweater stalls, and locals with stories to tell if you stop and listen.
Whether you're buying hand-knitted mufflers from Auntie near the library or posing against a scenic railing with a soft fog filter, this is the people-watching capital of the hills. And somehow, the street always smells like roasted corn, wet pine, and nostalgia.

3/7

Landour

Mussoorie’s quieter, cooler alternative, Landour, is where the real charm lives. This sleepy cantonment town just above Mussoorie is a time capsule of colonial-era cottages, quiet bakeries, and winding paths.
It’s also home to India’s most beloved storyteller, Ruskin Bond, who lives just a short walk from Landour’s famed Ivy Cottage. If you’re lucky, you might even spot him signing books at Cambridge Book Depot on Saturdays.
Oh, and the views? Expect clouds casually drifting through your face as you sip hot chocolate at Char Dukan. Beat that.

4/7

Colonial hangover

Mussoorie doesn’t shy away from its colonial past, it leans into it like a star on a vintage film set. Think British cemeteries with moss-covered tombstones, gothic churches like St. Paul's, and Victorian-era hotels that still serve cucumber sandwiches.
There’s a certain faded glamour about the place, like a 1940s movie star in hiking boots. And nowhere is this more evident than at Savoy Hotel, a grand dame of British architecture that once inspired Agatha Christie.

5/7

Pleasant weather

No one does mood swings quite like Mussoorie. One minute it’s sunny, the next you’re in a scene straight out of Wuthering Heights, complete with swirling fog, distant thunder, and sudden cravings for chai.
Monsoons are particularly cinematic here—the rain lashes against tin rooftops while mist envelopes in slow-motion. Basically, Mussoorie doesn’t have weather; it has weather with twists.

6/7

Cemeteries, cable cars & Chaar Dukaan

Where else can you take a ropeway up to Gun Hill for panoramic views, stumble upon haunted legends at Camel’s Back cemetery, and then end your day eating Nutella pancakes at a 100-year-old tea stall?
Mussoorie mixes the classic with the oddball in the most delightful way. Even its ghosts, apparently, have style.

7/7

The OG boarding school town

There’s something about hill stations and boarding schools, but Mussoorie is the boarding school capital. From the elite Woodstock School to the prestigious Wynberg Allen, the town has raised generations of those who can hike a hill and quote Shakespeare in the same breath.
These schools brought in expats, scholars, artists—and a multicultural buzz that gave Mussoorie a cosmopolitan flair before it was cool.

Sure, newer hill stations are trendier, quieter, or less crowded. But Mussoorie? She’s still holding court. Mussoorie will always have something to say—usually in the form of a breeze that makes you believe in mountain magic again.
The Queen may age, but she never loses her charm.
