6 places in India that can totally rival Thailand

Thailand has long been the go-to for tropical vacations, cheap massages, full-moon parties, and spicy food that makes your soul sweat. But what if I told you India has its own versions of all that, and you won’t need to convert currency or explain your “extra visa pages” to immigration?
From turquoise beaches to night markets, spiritual retreats to party islands, here are six places in India that can rival Thailand, and in some cases, outdo it.

2/7

Andaman Islands = Phuket + Phi Phi

Andaman has beaches so pristine they’d make a Thai postcard jealous. You will get turquoise waters, coral reefs, and palm-lined shores, all without the tourist chaos.
You can complement your travel itinerary with Havelock Island (now known as Swaraj Dweep) for white sand beaches like Radhanagar (ranked among the world’s best), scuba diving at Neil Island, and snorkeling with Rajan the swimming elephant (yes, really).
Highlights: No visa runs, no language barrier, and no one trying to sell you a tuk-tuk ride to “one very special shop.”

3/7

Goa = Koh Samui

Goa may be India’s worst-kept secret, but it still holds its charm, especially if you know where to look. South Goa offers serene beaches that rival Thailand’s island getaways, while North Goa serves up the party vibes Thailand is famous for.
Places to go would be Palolem and Agonda for the chill, Anjuna and Vagator for the parties. And yes, shacks that serve seafood fresh off the boat.
Highlights: Yoga retreats, flea markets, and the kind of Portuguese-Indian fusion food that would confuse and delight your taste buds.

4/7

Rishikesh = Chiang Mai

Thailand has temples and wellness retreats. India has Rishikesh — the Yoga Capital of the World. Located on the banks of the Ganges with Himalayan foothills in the background, Rishikesh is where spirituality meets adventure.
Things to do here would be daily yoga, meditation, ashram stays, and a chance to “find yourself” (or at least stretch without distractions). Prefer adrenaline? Go white-water rafting or bungee jumping.
Highlights: You can meditate in the Beatles Ashram. Yes, those Beatles.

5/7

Puducherry = Krabi

With its French Quarter, pastel buildings, and café culture, Puducherry feels like a European beach town got lost on the Indian coast. Think yoga, croissants, and sunrises over the Bay of Bengal.
Places to visit would be Promenade Beach for the vibe, Serenity Beach for surfing, Auroville for a bit of mysticism and vegan gelato.
Highlights: No passport? No problem. And you can switch between dosa and baguettes without blinking.

6/7

Gokarna = Thailand’s hidden beach towns

Remember what Goa used to be like 20 years ago before it got discovered by every tourist ever? That’s Gokarna now. Laid-back beaches, yoga retreats, cliffside cafes, and travelers who just want to chill (and never leave).
Places to visit would be Kudle Beach and Om Beach for golden sands and sunsets. Half Moon and Paradise Beach if you're willing to hike for seclusion.
Highlights: It’s still quiet. Go before someone puts a Starbucks there.

7/7

Meghalaya = Thailand’s rainforests

Northern Thailand is famous for its lush jungles and natural beauty. Meghalaya is that, with a twist. Think waterfalls, caves, and living bridges made of roots — literally handmade by nature.
Places to visit would be Cherrapunji for clouds and cliffs, Dawki for transparent river boating, and Nongriat to trek to the double-decker root bridge.
Highlights: The people are friendly, the hills are green, and the air smells like rain and magic.
