6 overrated Indian destinations that might not live up to the hype

If you want to travel and plan to gather more experiences in 2025, it’s also advised that you skip certain places that are overrated and won’t add much to your schemes. These places hold records in welcoming hundreds of visitors every year, so overcrowding is one aspect that describes them in some way. But, you are not at a loss though. India has endless options to cater to all types of travellers. While many famous destinations are frequently visited, they at times don’t live up to the hype. So, let’s have a look at some of those destinations in India that may not be worth your time and money.

2/7

Goa's overcrowded beaches

With its sun, sand, and sea, Goa has long been a popular destination for both domestic and foreign tourists. But its notoriety has come at the expense of crowded, noise, and escalating costs. There is little room for a tranquil getaway on several of Goa's beaches, like Baga and Calangute, which have become overly commercialised. Alternatives like Varkala or Gokarna can provide a more tranquil setting if you're searching for a calm beach experience.

3/7

Taj Mahal, Agra

While the Taj Mahal is undoubtedly a magnificent monument, Agra itself falls short of the grandeur its fame suggests. The heavy commercialization and the constant throng of tourists often take away from the monument's splendor. Many visitors find themselves disappointed by the state of surrounding areas and the overhyped nature of the city, making it less appealing than it once was.

4/7

Shimla, Himachal Pradesh

Shimla, which was once a well-liked hill station, has become a busy metropolis that faces issues with pollution, traffic, and overcrowding. Even while the weather is good, Shimla's once-calm charm has mostly disappeared. It is challenging to appreciate the city's former splendour because it is frequently overrun with tourists during busy times. For a more genuine hill station experience, try Manali or Mcleodganj.

5/7

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

In recent years, Rishikesh, famous for its spiritual significance and yoga retreats, has become increasingly commercialised. The town now faces an influx of mass tourism, leading to crowded streets, plastic waste, and a loss of its once serene ambiance, despite the continued popularity of the Ganga Aarti and yoga sessions. For those seeking a quieter and more peaceful spiritual retreat, destinations like Tirthan Valley or Spiti Valley might offer a more rejuvenating experience.

6/7

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

India's spiritual capital, Varanasi, is a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists who are seeking cultural immersion. However, those hoping for a quiet spiritual experience may be overwhelmed by the constant noise, and pollution. Despite their importance, the city's sacred ghats are surrounded by a chaotic atmosphere that many tourists find startling. Places like Bodh Gaya or Haridwar offer a comparable but more serene spiritual experience.

7/7

Kerala Backwaters

Kerala’s backwaters are frequently featured in travel brochures, promising a serene and idyllic experience. But as tourism flourished, more houseboats, as well as more visitors swamped the previously tranquil backwaters. Waste frequently contaminates the streams, making for an unsettling experience. Explore the less crowded parts of the Andaman Islands or the Sunderbans if you're searching for a peaceful aquatic getaway.
