5 top spots to see Asiatic Lions in Gujarat, India

Gujarat is the proud home of the majestic Asiatic lion, a species that once roamed across the Middle East and India. Sadly, the creature is now found only in the Gir Forest of Gujarat. While the Gir National Park remains the most famous lion sanctuary in Gujarat, the region offers several other fascinating spots for wildlife enthusiasts to observe these rare cats.
Here are five of the best spots in Gujarat to see Asiatic lions in their natural habitat.

2/6

Sasan Gir Wildlife Sanctuary

Sasan Gir Wildlife Sanctuary is often considered a continuation of the Gir ecosystem. While Gir National Park is the more famous attraction, Sasan Gir offers similar opportunities to see Asiatic lions up close. The sanctuary is part of the larger Gir Protected Area and provides a more immersive experience into the lion’s world. Sasan Gir is home to several other species, including leopards, antelopes, and a variety of bird species, making it a fantastic place for photography and nature walks.

3/6

Barda Hills Wildlife Sanctuary

Situated near the coastal town of Porbandar, Barda Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is another promising yet lesser-known spot to witness Asiatic lions. The sanctuary’s rugged terrain, which includes hills, forests, and scrublands, serves as a vital corridor for lions migrating from Gir. Though not as frequented as Gir, Barda Hills is increasingly becoming popular for wildlife enthusiasts seeking a more tranquil and off-the-beaten-path lion sighting experience.

4/6

Velavadar Blackbuck National Park

Although Velavadar Blackbuck National Park is primarily known for its blackbuck population, it has recently seen a growing population of Asiatic lions. Located in the Bhavnagar district, the park provides an entirely different landscape for lion sightings. Unlike the dense forests of Gir, Velavadar’s vast grasslands and open plains provide a unique environment for the lions, allowing for excellent visibility during a safari.

6/6

Junagadh

Junagadh on the outskirts of Gir also offers an excellent base for exploring the Asiatic lion population. The Girnar Hills, which are close to Junagadh, offer a different perspective on lion sightings. Though not a dedicated wildlife sanctuary, the region is noted for the occasional sighting of Asiatic lions, particularly in the lower hills and nearby forested areas. The Girnar hills themselves are an important religious site, and visitors can combine their wildlife experience with a trek to the ancient temples on the hilltop.
