5 places you can consider visiting on the Bengaluru-Bandipur-Ooty trail

Craving a road trip that’s part city escape, part forest safari, and part misty-mountain chill? We bring to you the Bengaluru–Bandipur–Ooty circuit, which is one of South India’s most loved travel routes, and for good reason. In just 6–7 hours of driving, and tons of natural beauty in between, you’ll go from bustling tech capital to tiger territory, and finally to a dreamy hill station draped in tea and nostalgia.
Here are some of the must-visit stops on this travel circuit that effortlessly blends wildlife, heritage, and scenic indulgence.

2/6

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, often referred to as the “Pakshi Kashi of Karnataka,” is the largest bird sanctuary in the state. It’s spread across 40 acres in Mandya district, and has six islets along the banks of the Kaveri River. If you opt to visit this place, expect to see spoonbills, kingfishers, storks, and even crocodiles basking lazily on the rocks. So keep your cameras ready.

3/6

Bandipur National Park

Next up is Bandipur National Park in our itinerary. Home to the second highest tiger population in India, as per Bandipurnationalpark.in, we intend to try our luck here in spotting one of the big bats here. If not wildlife, it’s also one of India’s most scenic forest drives, which we would like to experience. Keep your eyes peeled even while driving, as the highway cuts through the forest and you might miss spotting a deer, or even tuskers along the way. You can go on a jungle safari in the early morning or late evening for the best chance of wildlife sightings.

4/6

Needle Rock View Point, Gudalur

Just before you ascend into Ooty, you can consider taking a quick detour to the Needle Rock View Point in Gudalur. It offers a panoramic, almost cinematic view of the Western Ghats, where valleys stretch endlessly. Unlike Ooty’s often-crowded viewpoints, this one is surprisingly serene. It's a great stop for drone shots or a coffee break before the final hilly climb.

5/6

Ooty Botanical Garden

Once you reach Ooty, start your exploration with the iconic Government Botanical Gardens. Spread over 54 acres, this 19th-century garden is a beautifully curated showcase of exotic plants, orchids, and centuries-old trees. The perfectly manicured lawns, colorful flowerbeds, and glasshouse make it ideal for a post-lunch stroll or picnic. Don’t miss the fossilized tree trunk here, which is estimated to be over 20 million years old.

6/6

Doddabetta Peak

You can wrap your trip by driving up to Doddabetta Peak, which is also the highest point in the Nilgiris at 2,637 m. Once you are there, the incredible views, especially on a clear day, will be something that will remain etched on your mind for a long time. There’s also a telescope house if you're feeling touristy, but the real charm lies in breathing in the crisp, eucalyptus-scented air and just soaking in the silence. Early morning for sunrise views or late afternoon for softer light and fewer crowds.
