5 oldest cities stood the test of time and became living museums

The oldest cities in the world hold unusual and interesting stories of human civilization, culture, and survival, passed down through thousands of years. These ancient cities have witnessed the rise and fall of empires, the birth, buildup of traditions, and numerous outstanding moments that influenced and changed humanity’s journey.

Calling a city the "oldest" is not quite easy, as it depends on many factors influencing its age, like continuous habitation, urban development, and the evolution of organised societies. Despite wars and natural disasters, these cities have survived and evolved today as vibrant centers today. They are like living museums, where time’s passage is etched in stone and culture. Here are the world’s 5 oldest cities, according to World Atlas.

2/6

Jericho, Palestinian Territories

Jericho is often recognised as the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, dating back almost 11,000 years to around 9600 BCE. Located near the Jordan River, it still has some of the earliest urban settlements, including the famed ancient city walls known as the Wall of Jericho. This city survived multiple ancient civilizations, absorbing cultural diversities from Canaanites to Romans. Despite conflicts and changes in control, Jericho's continuous habitation places it at the forefront of ancient urban history.

3/6

Byblos, Lebanon

Byblos in Lebanon dates back to roughly 8000 BCE, making it one of the earliest inhabited cities. Famous for its role in trading and as the birthplace of the Phoenician alphabet, Byblos aided in cultural and economic growth for thousands of years. It went through various rulers, including Egyptians and Romans, leaving behind special archaeological treasures and earning a UNESCO World Heritage status.

4/6

Aleppo, Syria

Aleppo has been continuously inhabited for over 7,000 years, established around 5000 BCE. It is located strategically on the Silk Road and became a vital trading and cultural hub. Despite damage from conflicts, Aleppo's rich history includes influences from the Hittites, Romans, Byzantines, and Islamic Empire, making its enduring importance in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern history.

5/6

Damascus, Syria

Damascus, known as one of the oldest cities globally, traces its roots back over 8,000 years. Its strategic location made it an important trading center through many empires, including the Aramaeans, Romans, and Muslims. It flourished as the Umayyad Caliphate capital and remains a vital cultural and historical city with rich Islamic heritage.

6/6

Susa, Iran

Susa, founded around 4400 BCE in southwestern Iran, was a prominent city in the Elamite, Persian, and Parthian empires. It served as a cultural and political bridge between Mesopotamian and Iranian civilizations. The city included grand palaces and temples, notable for its mention in ancient texts like the Old Testament as Shushan, symbolising its historical depth and significance.
