5 national parks bigger than countries like Spain, Switzerland, or Germany

You must have visited national parks, tried that safari, and perhaps spotted a tiger too. Now if you think that national parks are only limited to these winding trails, safaris, etc, here’s a surprise. Did you know that there are some national parks across the world that are so massive that they are actually bigger than some countries as well? Yes, there are parks out there that make sovereign nations look like pocket squares. Let’s take a wild trip through five of the world’s largest national parks that are not just big, they’re country-crushing huge.

2/6

Northeast Greenland National Park, Greenland

Size: 972,000 sq km - Bigger than France, Spain, and Germany combined
Northeast Greenland National Park is the largest in the world and covers nearly half the island. To put it in perspective, it’s about 45 times the size of Switzerland. Forget tourist buses, you’d need a fleet of planes, and sheer determination to explore even a corner of it. Wildlife is sparse but mighty, where you can spot polar bears, musk oxen, and walruses rule this icy kingdom. Also, there are more animal residents here than human ones, only a handful of scientists and military personnel live within its boundaries.

3/6

Namib-Naukluft National Park, Namibia

Size: 49,768 sq km - Bigger than Switzerland
Home to some of the world’s tallest sand dunes, this park stretches across Namibia’s coastline and spills deep into the ancient Namib Desert. Switzerland may have snow-capped Alps, but this park offers surreal ochre landscapes and eerie “dead” valleys that look straight out of movie sets.

4/6

Wood Buffalo National Park, Canada

Size: 44,807 sq km - Bigger than Denmark
Established to protect the world’s largest herd of free-roaming wood bison, this park is also home to whooping cranes and countless boreal species. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but the real flex is its size. Denmark could fit in inside Wood Buffalo and still leave plenty of room left. Add to it salt plains, rivers, and one of the world’s largest inland freshwater deltas, and you’ve got a park that’s essentially a country disguised as wilderness, beauty, and grandeur.

5/6

Wrangell–St. Elias National Park, USA (Alaska)

Size: 53,321 sq km – bigger than Switzerland and Denmark
The heavyweight of the US national park system. Here you’ll find 16 of North America’s tallest peaks, glaciers sprawling like frozen rivers, and endless wilderness. It’s so vast you could fit Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Switzerland inside it, with still more room to spare.

6/6

Ruaha National Park, Tanzania

Size: 20,226 sq km – bigger than Slovenia
Ruaha is East Africa’s unsung safari giant. Think sprawling savannas, vast baobab forests, and some of the largest elephant herds in the world. It’s larger than entire European nations, and yet far less crowded than Serengeti.
