From the Bara and Chota Imambara to Rumi Darwaza, Lucknow’s heritage offers a timeless journey into royal charm and cultural heritage that continues to enchant every visitor.

2/6

Bara Imambara (Asafi Imambara)

A prominent imambara and mosque complex located in Lucknow, it is the world’s second-largest imambara and one of the grandest buildings of the city. The purpose of its construction was to provide employment to famine-affected people. The complex includes the large Asfi mosque, the Bhul-Bhulaiya, and Bowli, which is a steep well. The building reflects ornamental Mughal architecture without the use of iron or European materials. The construction of the Bara Imambara was overseen by the architect Kifayatullah, and this building is also a protected monument by the ASI.

3/6

Chota Imambara

Chota Imambara, located in the city of Lucknow, is also known as Imambara Hussainabad Mubarak, and the monument took almost 54 years to build. This spectacular monument was built as an imambara, or a congregation hall, for Shia Muslims. It is greatly known for its intricate decorations, chandeliers, and magnificent Mughal-influenced architecture with Persian elements. The monument glows differently during special festivals, giving it the name the Palace of Lights, with stunning decorations and lights. The Chota Imambara symbolizes the Nawabi grandeur and spiritual significance for the Shia community in Lucknow.

4/6

British Residency

A group of several buildings in the city of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, the British Residency served as the residence for the British Resident General, who was a representative in the court of the Nawab of Awadh. Even after the Siege of Lucknow, the building remains greatly in ruins, but it is surrounded by lawns and flowerbeds and serves as a tourist attraction. A light and sound show is also held here each evening that tells the history of the Residency, which visitors must definitely witness, especially history buffs.

5/6

Rumi Darwaza

Also known as the Turkish Gate, this monument is located in Lucknow and was built by Nawab Asaf-Ud-Daula. The Rumi Darwaza is a great example of Awadhi architecture, around 60 feet tall, and modeled after the Sublime Porte in Istanbul. This gateway has its own distinct style, making it stand out from the typical Mughal architectural style. Visitors must definitely visit here to witness the iconic symbol of Lucknow’s architectural heritage.

Chattar Manzil

The Chattar Manzil is a building located in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, and served as a palace for the rulers of Awadh and their wives. This monument is located on the banks of the river Gomti.
