5 must-visit ancient sites in India that are older than the Pyramids

When ancient wonders are discussed, the Egyptian pyramids, especially the Great Pyramid of Giza built around 2560 BCE, often top the list. But interestingly, India, with its vast and layered history, is also home to several archaeological sites that are even older. These aren’t ornate palaces or towering structures, but remnants of early human civilisation that offer a fascinating glimpse into our shared prehistoric past. Here are five such Indian sites that predate the pyramids and are slowly gaining the recognition they deserve. (Canva)

Bhimbetka Rock Shelters (Madhya Pradesh)

The Bhimbetka Rock Shelters, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are tucked away in the Vindhya hills close to Bhopal. With some rock shelters that date back at least 10,000 BCE, these are among the most important prehistoric sites in the world and provide some of the earliest indications of human habitation on the Indian subcontinent. These colourful rock drawings, which show hunting scenes, dances, and animals, are proof of the everyday lives and creative impulses of early man. (Canva)

Edakkal Caves (Kerala)

Perched in the misty hills of Wayanad, the Edakkal Caves aren’t exactly caves in the usual sense, they’re more like rocky giants, where a massive boulder split open to create a dramatic fissure. But it’s what’s inside that really rocks: petroglyphs dating back to at least 6000 BCE, featuring humans, animals, and cryptic symbols. Thought to be relics of the Neolithic and Mesolithic periods, some markings even hint at connections to the Indus Valley script. Edakkal is one of South India’s oldest artistic archives—a prehistoric gallery tucked inside a geological accident. (Canva)

Mangar Bani (Haryana)

Tucked just beyond Delhi’s urban sprawl, Mangar Bani is a forested ridge that's beginning to reshape our understanding of South Asia’s ancient past. Archaeologists have recently uncovered rock art and microlithic tools here, hinting at human habitation dating back nearly 100,000 years. If confirmed, it would place Mangar Bani among the oldest known settlements in the region, predating even the Egyptian pyramids. For now, it remains a little-known prehistoric gem, but rising interest may soon thrust this quiet woodland into the archaeological spotlight. (Representative image/Canva)

Bhirrana (Haryana)

Recognised by the Archaeological Survey of India as the oldest Harappan site, Bhirrana pushes the timeline of the Indus Valley Civilization back significantly. Radiocarbon dating places the site's earliest layer around 7560 BCE. Excavations have uncovered well-planned mud-brick houses, pottery, tools, and evidence of early agriculture. Lahuradewa (Uttar Pradesh)

Lahuradewa, an archaeological site in Uttar Pradesh, dates back roughly 9,000 to 10,000 years (around 7000–9000 BCE). It holds immense historical value as one of the earliest known sites in South Asia to show evidence of pottery and rice cultivation. This makes it a key marker in the region’s transition to agrarian life, shedding light on early farming practices and settled communities in the Indian subcontinent. (Representative image/ Canva)
