5 last-minute weekend trips from Delhi you can plan right now!

India is a diverse country with a multitude of cities filled with history, culture, and nature. There are many places across India that are perfect for a long weekend getaway. From the Mughal splendor of Agra to the royal beauty of Jaipur, the holy ghats of Varanasi to the wildness of Ranthambore, every destination has its own unique blend of history, spirituality, culture, and adventure. You can also discover some of the country's most stunning architectural wonders at these destinations, making for a truly rich travel experience.

Let us consider some destinations that are ideal for the Independence Day long weekend:

2/6

Agra, Uttar Pradesh

This city is rich in Mughal history and architecture and is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site—the Taj Mahal—built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Apart from the Taj Mahal, you can visit the massive Agra Fort, another UNESCO site and an important example of Mughal military architecture, and Fatehpur Sikri, the erstwhile Mughal capital. Agra is also famous for its vibrant markets such as Sadar Bazaar (known for leather goods and handicrafts), Kinari Bazaar (famous for wedding items and fabrics), and Rawatpara Market (spices, petha, and traditional snacks). Food lovers can enjoy local street treats like spicy chaat, malai lassi, and kachoris, available near Kinari Bazaar and MG Road.

3/6

Jaipur, Rajasthan

Jaipur, the “Pink City,” is famous for its royal charm, with grand forts and palaces. Visitors can explore vibrant bazaars such as Johari Bazaar (jewels and gemstones), Bapu Bazaar (handicrafts and leather items), Chandpole Bazaar (traditional carvings and fabrics), and Nehru Bazaar (colorful jootis). Must-visit landmarks include Amer Fort with its hilltop views and blend of Rajput and Mughal styles, the iconic Hawa Mahal, the serene Jal Mahal in the middle of a lake, and the City Palace with its museums and royal collections. Foodies should not miss Masala Chowk, which offers classic Rajasthani dishes like dal bati churma, kachori, and local sweets.

4/6

Mathura–Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh

This pilgrimage region is deeply tied to the life of Lord Krishna—Mathura being his birthplace and Vrindavan associated with his youth. The Krishna Janmasthan Temple complex in Mathura marks the sacred birthplace, while Vrindavan is home to famous temples such as Banke Bihari Temple and ISKCON. Popular markets include Tilak Dwar Market, Chatta Bazaar, and Highway Plaza Mall for traditional goods. Local specialties include the famous Mathura peda, lassi served in a kulhad, bedmi puri with aloo sabzi, and other milk-based sweets reflecting Braj cuisine.

5/6

Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan

One of India’s most famous tiger reserves, Ranthambore is home to the majestic Bengal tiger as well as a rich variety of flora and fauna. The landscape features dense forests, lakes, and rugged hills. Visitors can take guided safaris to spot wildlife, and the historic Ranthambore Fort inside the park offers panoramic views. In nearby Sawai Madhopur, travelers can enjoy Rajasthani delicacies such as dal bati churma, laal maas, gatte ki sabzi, and ker sangri.

6/6

Amritsar, Punjab

This city is home to the Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib), the holiest shrine of Sikhism, famous for its gold-plated sanctum and the community langar that serves free meals to thousands daily. The city also offers vibrant shopping at Hall Bazaar and Lawrence Road, where you can buy Punjabi juttis, phulkari fabrics, and souvenirs. Amritsar’s food scene is legendary, with must-try dishes including Amritsari kulcha, chole bhature, lassi, and a wide range of street snacks.
