5 forest trails near Mumbai for a green escape

A forest trail is a walking or hiking path that goes through a forested area. Forest trails are ideal for nature walks, light trekking, photography, birdwatching, and escaping the noise of the city. Here are 5 forest trails near Mumbai that offer scenic beauty and a chance to connect with nature.

2/6

Kanheri Caves Trail

It is a 14 km easy, family-friendly hike in Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Mumbai, to the ancient Kanheri Caves, a serene Buddhist monastery. With more than a hundred rock-cut chambers where monks prayed and meditated, the caves are a historical gem. The hike, which has an elevation of 272 meters, blends history and nature perfectly.

3/6

Sinhagad Fort Trail

The Sinhagad Fort trek near Pune is an 8 km trek that involves a sharp 671-meter elevation and is better suited for trekkers with experience. From the ancient Katraj Tunnel, the trek has food stalls scattered on the route to refresh you. The fort towards the summit boasts deep historical roots connected to Shivaji Maharaj.

4/6

Karnala Fort Trail

Situated close to Panvel, the Karnala Fort Trek is a 5.8 km trek along a bird sanctuary. The trail is wide at the beginning and gradually inclines as you ascend. The 352-meter elevation gain makes it a little tough but doable for most trekkers. The top offers a 360-degree view of the hills and forests of the Raigad district.

5/6

Mulund Peak Trail

This 3.1 km trek near Mulund Colony is located in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. It's a simple and short trek with an altitude difference of 245 meters, ideal for a quick weekend escape. The route traverses green hills and provides glimpses of both Mulund Peak and Cyprus Hills.

6/6

Vetal Tekdi Trail

The Vetal Tekdi trail in Pune is a 3.9 km trail with an easy elevation of only 78 meters and is a good one for newbies. The hill has multiple starting points, such as Law College Road or the ARAI base. It's a peaceful getaway amidst the city, where you will get to see sunrise, butterflies, and chirping birds.
