5 cheapest countries Indians can travel to right now

Who says international travel has to be expensive? With shorter flight routes, budget airlines and easy visa rules, stepping outside India no longer requires a massive bank balance. In fact, some of the most memorable travel experiences lie just across the border or a few hours away by air, and they come at prices that can rival a domestic holiday (easily!). From mountain escapes and tropical beaches to buzzing street markets and ancient temples, these countries offer incredible value for Indian travellers who want more for less.

2/6

Nepal

One country that is perhaps as close as it can get to being an ‘Indian budget traveller’s paradise’ is Nepal. For one, Indians need not acquire a visa, fill any forms, or even have a passport. This goes a long way in lessening costs and worries involved in traveling. The easiest country to reach from India is either by road, train and road, or a short flight. Once there, everything feels refreshingly affordable. Budget guesthouses are easy to find, meals like dal bhat are hearty and cheap, and getting around cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara won’t burn a hole in your pocket.

3/6

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is the kind of destination that quietly surprises you with how much it offers for how little you spend. Just a short flight from India, the island nation is perfect for travellers looking to combine beaches, wildlife, history and lush hill country, all on a budget. Stay in homestays or cheap hotels, take trains for a few rupees, and eat as much rice and curry as you want without bothering about the price tag. From the colonial streets of Galle to the misty hills of Ella and the cultural heart of Kandy, Sri Lanka feels diverse, relaxed and wonderfully affordable.

4/6

Thailand

Thailand remains a favourite for Indian travellers, and for good reason. It’s affordable, lively and incredibly easy to explore, even on a tight budget. With regular and affordable flight deals from Indian cities and simple visa options (it is visa-free for a short duration, but with mandatory Thailand Digital Arrival Card), Thailand is often the first international trip for many, and rarely the last. Street food stalls serve up flavour-packed meals for next to nothing, budget hotels are available even in popular tourist areas, and local transport is cheap and efficient. Whether you’re temple-hopping in Bangkok, chasing waterfalls in Chiang Mai or relaxing on island beaches, Thailand lets you splurge on experiences without overspending.

5/6

Vietnam

Vietnam is one of those destinations that feels like a secret, until you visit and realise how incredibly good value it is. Flights from India are becoming more common, the e-visa process is straightforward, and once you arrive, your money stretches impressively far. Hotels are affordable, street food is both delicious and cheap, and travelling between cities won’t cost much either. Vietnam delivers culture, scenery and unforgettable food without demanding a big budget.

6/6

Bhutan

Bhutan might not be the first place you think of when planning a budget trip, but for Indian travellers, it can be surprisingly affordable. There’s no visa requirement, road access from eastern India keeps travel costs low, and budget stays are available across major towns. Life in Bhutan moves at a slower, calmer pace, and that’s part of its charm. Days are spent exploring monasteries, soaking in mountain views and wandering quiet towns rather than ticking off expensive attractions.
