5 animal festivals from across the world

All over the world, many animal festivals are held that celebrate animals as sacred beings, symbols of prosperity, and important members of local communities. From grand camel fairs in India to playful monkey feasts in Thailand and many more animal festivals, everyone should experience these festivals once in their lifetime to learn more deeply about the culture. Exploring these festivals reveals not only fascinating customs but also the universal respect and affection people share for animals across the globe.

The Pushkar Camel Fair takes place in the town of Pushkar and is one of India’s largest camel, horse, and cattle fairs. This time is also an important pilgrimage season for Hindus. This fair is mostly held in late October and early November. The fair has developed into a vibrant cultural extravaganza attracting thousands of animals, especially camels, horses, and cattle, which are decorated colorfully. At the fair, one can look at the camel races, dances, traditional music, camel beauty contests, and religious ceremonies honoring the sacred Pushkar Lake. The Pushkar fair alone attracts over 200,000 visitors.

The Monkey Buffet Festival honors the local crab-eating macaque population, believed to bring good luck and prosperity to the region. The festival begins with an opening ceremony that includes performances by dancers in monkey costumes. When the monkeys arrive, hosts remove sheets from the banquet tables, revealing decorative spreads of vibrantly hued fruits and vegetables, and offer them these fruits.

Pamplona Bull Run, Spain

The running of the bulls event is held every year from 6–14 July. We know what you’re wondering… YES, this is the same event that the famous characters of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara ran in near the end of the movie. This is a famous festival held in Spain in which, on each morning of the festival at 8 am, the bulls are released from their corral at Calle de Santo Domingo to run along a barricaded route. The participants in this run are ahead of the bulls, and they have to reach the endpoint before the bulls. It has become a major global tourism event, today very different from the general traditional festivals.
