10 worst states to live in America in 2025: Where life is toughest

A recent WalletHub study has released its list of Worst U.S. States to Live in 2025. The report is prepared keeping factors like safety, economy, healthcare, and quality of life in consideration. (everyday living). While some states shine, others struggle with every-day living challenges.

A look at 10 lowest-ranked states:

2/11

New Mexico

New Mexico has been ranked as the ‘Worst State to Live In’ 2025. It is because the state has the highest crime rate nationwide. The next reason for this title is that the state also suffers from poor educational and health facilities. These are the reasons behind New Mexico having one of the highest poverty rates in the U.S. These combined factors contribute heavily to its bottom position.

3/11

Louisiana

Louisiana is on the second spot on the list. The reason behind is its weak economy and poor health and education scores. Not to mention that crime rates and poverty remain high. The longest working hours further drops the quality of life here. However, the state scores high on it’s food and music which are globally renowned.

4/11

Arkansas

Next on the list is Arkansas which struggles with safety and quality of life. There are barely any good schools or hospitals. Also, it is among the least safe states in America. Residents have limited opportunities and difficult choices making life more complicated and difficult.

5/11

Mississippi

Though Mississippi is pocket-friendly, it scores near the bottom for quality of life. There are serious gaps in healthcare and education and several residents have no health insurance. Poverty is the highest in the nation and financial/social struggles make it hard to live.

6/11

Alaska

Alaska is beautiful and a must-visit state for adventure lovers, but life in Alaska is difficult. The jobs don’t pay enough but the cost of living is extremely high. Incomes haven’t grown as fast as in other states. People work some of the longest hours in the country, and everyday conveniences—like restaurants—are few or far.

7/11

Nevada

Nevada is one of the most-talked about American states. Housing is unaffordable as the cost of living is high. The state also ranks among the least safe and has one of the weakest economies. It might be a great choice as a weekend getaway, but not the easiest place to live and survive.

8/11

South Carolina

South Carolina is affordable, but that’s the only good point. It’s unsafe and residents have limited access to good healthcare and education. The state is ranked among the least safe states, which weighs heavily on families. Despite its southern charm and beaches, these everyday challenges can make life stressful.

9/11

Oklahoma

Oklahoma is not a surprise on the list. The state continues to face problems when it comes to education and healthcare. Many residents don’t have health insurance. Public schools often lack funding and safety is a big concern. While the cost of living is low, there’s no quality of life.

10/11

West Virginia

West Virginia is known for affordable housing, but it comes with trade-offs. The state struggles with poverty, poor healthcare, and limited educational opportunities. Even though it’s more budget-friendly, many families face daily hardships. The mountains may be beautiful, but the realities of living there are less ideal.

11/11

Alabama

Alabama rounds out the bottom ten, held back by weak scores in education, healthcare, and economic growth. It is affordable, but opportunities are limited, and residents face uphill battles when it comes to jobs and services. Families often feel the strain of poor systems despite the lower cost of living. The southern hospitality is real, but so are the challenges ahead for many in everyday life and well-being.
