10 unhappiest countries in the world

Happiness can be measured too! The World Happiness Report assesses global well-being each year based on factors such as social support, economic stability, life expectancy, freedom, corruption levels, and overall quality of life. While the top-ranking nations often draw praise for their progressive systems and high standards of living, the countries at the bottom reveal where humanity’s biggest struggles persist. These lowest-ranking nations face a combination of conflict, economic instability, political turmoil, weak institutions, and limited access to essential services.

2/11

Afghanistan

Afghanistan continues to rank as the least happy country in the world. Ongoing political instability, restrictions on freedoms, particularly for women and girls, and high unemployment dominate everyday life. Many regions struggle with food insecurity, limited healthcare access, and deteriorating public services.

3/11

Sierra Leone

Despite notable progress since its civil war, Sierra Leone faces widespread poverty, unemployment, and fragile public health systems. Many communities lack reliable access to clean water, electricity, and healthcare. Weak infrastructure and systemic corruption further affect trust and overall well-being.

4/11

Lebanon

Lebanon is experiencing one of the most severe economic collapses in recent history. Hyperinflation, a near-worthless currency, prolonged political deadlock, and widespread shortages of medicines, electricity, and fuel have drastically lowered quality of life. Basic services are unreliable, and daily hardships combined with declining public trust have contributed to Lebanon’s extremely low happiness score.

5/11

Malawi

Malawi continues to remain one of the poorest countries globally, with the majority of its population dependent on agriculture. There are various reasons like droughts, erratic rainfall, and climate-related shocks that frequently disrupt food supplies. Limited access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities adds to the struggle. The economic vulnerability of rural communities keeps overall life satisfaction low.

6/11

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe continues to struggle with acute inflation, an unstable currency, and widespread unemployment, placing significant pressure on households. Shortages of essential goods, including medicines and basic supplies, remain frequent. Ongoing political tensions, low trust in state institutions, and unreliable access to public services further deepen uncertainty and pessimism about the country’s outlook.

7/11

Botswana

While Botswana is often seen as more stable than many of its regional neighbours, it still ranks low on global happiness indexes, largely due to widening inequality. Its diamond industry has driven economic growth, but the benefits remain unevenly distributed. Youth unemployment persists as a serious concern, and rural communities continue to face limited opportunities and resources.

8/11

Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo)

The DRC’s low ranking is tied to decades of conflict, political instability, and widespread poverty. Millions of people face displacement, and many regions lack basic infrastructure, including roads, electricity, and clean water. Despite abundant natural resources, corruption and weak governance prevent economic benefits from reaching the population.

9/11

Yemen

Prolonged conflict has pushed Yemen into one of the gravest humanitarian emergencies globally. Large parts of the population face acute hunger, recurring disease outbreaks, and the collapse of critical infrastructure. With healthcare access limited and many families forced to flee their homes, everyday life has become extremely difficult. In numerous regions, even basic services such as clean water and electricity are scarce or completely unavailable.

10/11

Comoros

This small island nation struggles with limited economic opportunities, political instability, and heavy reliance on imports. Many residents face high unemployment, weak infrastructure, and gaps in healthcare services. Geographic isolation also raises the cost of goods, putting pressure on households.

11/11

Lesotho

Lesotho faces persistent poverty, harsh winters, limited employment opportunities, and a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS, one of the highest in the world. Many communities rely on remittances from workers in South Africa, leaving them economically vulnerable. Access to healthcare and education remains inconsistent, especially in remote mountainous regions.
