10 major currencies in the world every traveller should know about

Not all countries use the same currency. Well, everybody is aware of this. But, in terms of value, certain currencies manage to stand out not just within their own borders but also in worldwide markets, travel, trade, and finance, especially when it's considered in terms of matters globally. In terms of market value, certain monetary units are widely acknowledged for their widespread acceptance, and are recognised as the world's strongest currencies, while some fall in the weakest categories. Here, we have listed out 10 of the most widely used and well-known currencies in the world today, as per the World Population Review.

2/11

United States Dollar (USD)

The US dollar (USD) is the most sought-after currency globally, not merely for its value but for its central role in the world economy. Its strength is underpinned by the United States’ large gross domestic product (GDP) and a highly developed manufacturing sector, both of which are extensively traded and recognised across international markets.

3/11

European Euro (EUR)

Did you know about its origin? The European Euro (EUR) originated from Frankfurt, Germany, where the European Central Bank is headquartered. As per the records, 10 countries currently use the euro as their official currency. Its governance structure includes an Executive Board of four members, along with a president and a vice president, who oversee monetary policy and ensure stability across the Eurozone.

4/11

Japanese Yen (JPY)

The Japanese yen is Japan’s official currency and is also one of the most traded currencies globally. First introduced in 1882 and governed by the Bank of Japan, it serves as a major anchor in Asian financial markets. The yen is also widely held as a reserve currency due to Japan’s significant role in world trade and investment.

5/11

British Pound Sterling (GBP)

The Bank of England, an organisation structurally similar to the Federal Reserve System in the United States, is in charge of managing the British Pound Sterling (GBP). A Court of Directors, which has five formal members and nine more who are eligible to attend, oversees its governance. The board also consists of a chair and a deputy chair who oversee the operations and policies of the bank.

6/11

Canadian Dollar (CAD)

The Canadian dollar is the official currency of Canada and a key player in global finance due to Canada’s developed economy and natural resource exports. Established in 1934 by the Bank of Canada, the CAD is actively traded in forex markets and is often considered a leading “commodity currency,” reflecting Canada’s global trade links.

7/11

Swiss Franc (CHF)

The stability of the Swiss franc has earned it widespread acceptance. The CHF, which is overseen by the Swiss National Bank, is frequently viewed as a reliable currency amid uncertain global financial times. Despite having a smaller economy than the other countries on this list, the franc is arguably popular among foreign investors because of its stability and low rates of inflation.

8/11

South African Rand (ZAR)

The South African rand is another significant currency on the African continent, and is also the national currency of South Africa. Developed by the Reserve Bank of South Africa, it's extensively utilised in regional investment and commerce. The rand is nevertheless significant in emerging markets even though it is not as widely used as some of the other currencies on this list.

9/11

New Zealand Dollar

The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) is one of the stronger currencies in the world. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand manages its monetary policy, whose board consists of six members. A Deputy Governor and the Secretary to the Treasury are also among the six members. Records add that the bank aims to keep inflation between 2% and 3% and meets 11 times each year to review economic conditions and adjust policy as needed.

10/11

Gibraltar Pound (GIP)

The Gibraltar Pound (GIP) is further one of the top most valuable currencies in the world and is comparable in value to the British Pound Sterling. The euro is the currency most commonly exchanged against the GIP in international transactions, and it is governed by a central bank.

11/11

Chinese Yuan (CNY)

The Chinese Yuan (CNY) has been attracting global attention as the country aims to position it among the world’s top three reserve currencies. To achieve this, China is also working to increase cross-border currency exchanges and encourage greater investment from international banks. Most of the efforts are working, meanwhile the CNY is gradually becoming a focal point for global currency investors looking to capitalise on its growing international influence.
