5 places around the world that witness the largest animal gatherings

On all continents and across all oceans, there is an incredible display of natural events in which animals tend to congregate in staggering numbers. These events, whether due to migration, breeding patterns, wet-season patterns, or instincts of survival, rank among the most awe-inspiring displays of animals in the wild. From skies filled with battalions of bats, oceans filled with feeding frenzies, to grasslands alive with herds in motion, these destinations underscore the complex ways in which animals interact with climate, geology, and primeval rhythms of nature. Beyond their spectacular appeal, these events are crucial in terms of preserving the ecosystem.

2/6

Bracken Cave Preserve, Texas, USA

Bracken Cave is another remarkable place to witness one of nature’s most astonishing animal congregations. In the height of summer, it becomes home to an incredible 15 to 20 million Mexican free-tailed bats, forming the largest known gathering of mammals at a single site anywhere in the world. Each evening, the bats stream out of the cave in a vast, spiralling column that can continue for hours and is so dense it even appears on weather radar. Unlike seasonal migrations, Bracken Cave serves as a permanent gathering ground, where this immense population returns year after year to the very same location.

3/6

Serengeti–Maasai Mara, Tanzania and Kenya

The Great Migration is the biggest migration of animals across the continents, and is definitely one of the greatest events in the wild across the globe. Every year, more than 1.5 million wildebeests, together with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, embark upon a colossal circular migration between the Tanzanian plains of the world-famous Serengeti and the Maasai Mara in the Kenyan savannahs, in one of the biggest movements. Their migration is pegged on the rains, which bring new grazing grounds for these animals. Their migrations are also marked by river crossings, especially the Mara River, which is full of crocodiles, and the fate of the animals is almost sealed as they face various predators waiting for them in the waters.

4/6

Christmas Island, Australia

This is a massive migration of 40-50 million red crabs from the forests of Christmas Island to the ocean to spawn, transforming the island into a moving red carpet. The migration is so intense that it warrants the closure of roads, the construction of special crab bridges, and generally, a short-term adjustment of human activity to the needs of the wildlife. What makes this aggregation remarkable is its size and timing-nearly the entire adult crab population moves at once. Ecologically, red crabs are keystone animals to the forests of Christmas Island, where they help nullify leaf litter and thereby mold vegetation patterns; thus, this migration is not only spectacular but very relevant to the environment.

5/6

Kasanka National Park, Zambia

Kasanka National Park, between October and December, plays host to the largest mammal migration anywhere in the world by sheer numbers. An estimated 8 to 10 million straw-coloured fruit bats descend on a tiny patch of evergreen forest to feast on seasonal fruits. At dawn and dusk, the sky darkens as millions of bats take flight, creating almost an other-worldly spectacle. These bats play a critical role in seed dispersal and forest regeneration across central Africa, so Kasanka's gathering is one of the most ecologically important and least crowded wildlife events in the world.

6/6

Sardine Run, South Africa

This sardine run has been known as “The Greatest Shoal on Earth,” where a massive population of sardines, estimated in the trillions, migrates from South Africa’s coastlines. This action causes what can be described as a massive food chain frenzy, with accompanying dolphins, sharks, whales, seals, and thousands of sea and land birds.
