Statue of Unity in India

The world’s tallest statue, the Statue of Unity stands at a staggering 182 metres on the banks of the Narmada River in Gujarat. The statue is dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first Deputy Prime Minister. The monument symbolises national unity and the monumental task of integrating more than 500 princely states after Independence. The statue’s viewing gallery sits 153 metres above ground, offering panoramic views of the Sardar Sarovar Dam and the surrounding valleys.

Spring Temple Buddha in China

Towering above the hills of Henan province, the Spring Temple Buddha depicts a radiant copper statue of Vairocana Buddha. Positioned close to Foquan Temple and the Tianrui natural hot spring, the structure exceeds 200 metres in total height when its massive pedestal is included, while the statue alone stands an impressive 128 metres tall.

Laykyun Sekkya in Myanmar

Situated in Khatakan Taung near Monywa in Myanmar, the Laykyun Sekkya statue portrays a standing Gautama Buddha and ranks among the tallest freestanding statues globally. Finished in 2008, it towers above the surrounding plains, its golden facade shining strikingly under the sun. At its base lies an enormous reclining Buddha, adding to the site's importance as a major pilgrimage spot. Visitors can enter the structure and explore multiple floors adorned with murals illustrating episodes from the Buddha’s life.

Vishwas Swaroopam in India

Often referred to as the Statue of Belief, this monumental sculpture of Lord Shiva rises over Nathdwara in Rajasthan. Completed in 2022, it is among India’s most recent and striking large-scale statues. Towering at 106 metres, it portrays Shiva in a meditative posture, holding a trident with a grand Nandi by his side. The surrounding complex includes viewing galleries, beautifully designed gardens, and a sound-and-light show, making it a significant cultural and spiritual landmark.

Ushiku Daibutsu in Japan

The Ushiku Daibutsu in Ibaraki Prefecture is a monumental statue of Amitabha Buddha, built in 1993 to commemorate the birth of Shinran, founder of the Jōdo Shinshū school. Standing 100 metres tall, it is made of bronze and houses a multi-level museum inside. Visitors can take an elevator up to the chest-height observation deck at 85 metres, which offers serene views of the surrounding countryside. The statue is set within beautiful gardens featuring a pond, seasonal flowers, and a small animal park.

Guishan Guanyin in China

Located in Changsha, Hunan province, the Guishan Guanyin is a breathtaking 99-metre-tall statue representing the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara (Guanyin) with eleven heads and a thousand arms. This form symbolises compassion reaching in all directions. Completed in 2009, the statue stands within the Ningshan Temple complex and draws thousands of pilgrims each year. Its intricate design and detailed craftsmanship make it one of China’s most visually striking religious monuments.

Mother of All Asia – Tower of Peace in Philippines

This massive Marian statue in Batangas City is the tallest statue of the Virgin Mary in the world. At 98.15 metres, it represents unity and peace among the peoples of Asia. The structure also functions as a multi-purpose building, with chapels, museums, prayer rooms, and viewing decks spread across its floors. Completed in 2021, it has quickly become an important pilgrimage site and a major landmark in the Philippines.

Great Buddha of Thailand in Thailand

Located in the Wat Muang Monastery in Ang Thong province, the Great Buddha of Thailand is a colossal seated statue of the Buddha, built between 1990 and 2008. Standing approximately 92 metres tall and painted in striking gold, it dominates the rural landscape. The statue is temporarily closed for visitors (it has been closed since August 2024). This is the tallest statue in Thailand and a major cultural landmark.

Sendai Daikannon in Japan

This 92-metre statue towers over the city of Sendai. The statue depicts Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. Completed in 1991, the Sendai Daikannon once held the title of the world’s tallest goddess statue. Visitors can enter the statue and ascend via elevator through multiple floors filled with smaller Buddha statues and murals. Its presence on a hilltop makes it visible from many parts of the city, giving it a mystical aura, especially on misty days.

Dai Kannon of Kita no Miyako Park in Japan

Also known as the Hokkaido Kannon, this 88-metre statue stands in Ashibetsu, Hokkaido. This statue was completed back in 1989. The interior contains over a dozen floors accessible to visitors, each complete with shrines, meditation spaces, and small statues. The Hokkaido Kannon is surrounded by parkland, and the monument offers a tranquil setting.
