10 best places in the world to see penguins up close

Penguins, those adorable waddling wonders! Mention penguins and the mind goes straight to the cold climes of Antarctica. Well, Antarctica is not the only place to see these waddling beauties in the wild. From sub-Antarctic islands to equatorial shores, the “penguin-distribution-system” is surprising (and some unexpected). Before we list out the locations, here’s a little advice for travellers: focus on ethical, sustainable sites that prioritise conservation. Always maintain distance to avoid disturbing the birds.

2/11

Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica

This icy frontier hosts massive colonies of gentoo, Adélie, and chinstrap penguins. Zodiac landings will let you observe them waddling on beaches and diving into frigid waters up close. Emperor penguins may appear in deeper voyages. Check out November to March expedition cruises.

3/11

South Georgia Island, South Atlantic

Famous for its vast emperor penguin colonies—up to 500,000 birds strong—this remote sub-Antarctic gem allows shore walks among vibrant orange-chested emperors tending their chicks. Gentoo and the fabulous macaroni penguins are always a sight to behold. Cruises from the Falklands are ideal.

4/11

Punta Tombo, Argentina

This Patagonian reserve is home to the world's largest Magellanic penguin colony (over 200,000 pairs). Visitors can use the boardwalks and paths right alongside nesting burrows. The dramatic landscape and the bustling birds somehow complement each other. Best time to visit: September–April.

5/11

Falkland Islands, South Atlantic

With over 350,000 breeding pairs across 20+ islands, this archipelago is a penguin paradise. Walk among gentoo and Magellanic colonies on Saunders or Pebble Island, or spot rockhoppers on cliffs. Boat tours and hikes offer close-up interactions. Best time to visit: November–February.

6/11

Boulders Beach, Simon's Town, South Africa

This is Africa's only penguin colony, featuring over 2,000 African penguins in a sheltered cove. Walk the boardwalk to see them lounging on rocks, preening, and braying loudly—some even hop aboard kayaks. This spot is accessible all year round.

7/11

Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia

Watch 32,000 little (fairy) penguins parade ashore at dusk in one of the world's most iconic wildlife spectacles. Little penguins are the smallest penguin species in the world. There are guided night tours that allow closer beach access. The best time to visit is March–December.

8/11

Otago Peninsula, South Island, New Zealand

Spot rare yellow-eyed penguins (the world's rarest, with approximately 5,000 left) emerging from waves at hidden beaches like Sandfly Bay. There are ranger-guided hides that offer intimate views of foraging and nesting. Little and blue penguins are also common here.

9/11

Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

The northernmost penguins—endangered Galápagos penguins call the islands home. They thrive here despite the equator's warmth. Snorkel or kayak near Isabela and Fernandina Islands to see them fishing alongside sea lions and iguanas. There are boat tours that provide close encounters.

10/11

Punta Arenas and Isla Magdalena, Chile

In Patagonia, boat trips to Magdalena Island will show you approximately 60,000 Magellanic penguins nesting on cliffs and beaches. From Punta Arenas, observe their burrows and chick-feeding up close via guided landings. Breeding season is September–March.

11/11

Kaikoura, South Island, New Zealand

Swim with wild colonies of little (fairy) penguins in coastal waters or view them on rocky shores during boat or kayak tours. The area's rich marine life draws them close to shore, allowing surface-level sightings. Combine this trip with whale watching, and you will have one of the most memorable holidays.
