10 best national parks and wildlife sanctuaries to visit in India in December

Come December, the country’s forests, grasslands, and wetlands come alive with thriving wildlife and cooler temperatures. This is one of the best times to be out and about, exploring nature and wildlife. For someone looking for perfect safaris and birdwatching adventures, look no further, because December is that time of the year. December marks the start of the peak wildlife tourism season, when animals emerge into open meadows for warmth, and migratory birds arrive in flocks. From the lion-dotted forests of Gujarat to the rhino plains of Assam and the tiger territories of Central India, December is the perfect time to witness the wild heart of India.

2/11

Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan

This park was once a royal hunting ground. Ranthambore is, hands down, one of India’s most famous tiger reserves. Premier is the word. The dry deciduous forest and ancient ruins, including the 10th-century Ranthambore Fort, create a dramatic backdrop for spotting Bengal tigers basking in the winter sun. For photography enthusiasts, the forest is an endless stunning photo-ops. The cool temperature ensures comfortable safaris.

3/11

Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand

This is India’s oldest national park. Corbett remains a classic destination for nature lovers, and a perfect long weekend trip from Delhi-NCR and other neighbouring states. Corbett is known for its population of tigers, elephants, and diverse birdlife. It is estimated that there are over 600 species of birds inside the park. Now that’s the kind of number we love. The park’s Dhikala zone, in particular, offers prime chances of spotting big cats and herds of deer.

4/11

Kaziranga National Park, Assam

Kaziranga is easily one of the most premier destinations, not just in the northeast, but also in the whole of India. The experiences are exclusive, to say the least. Kaziranga is home to the world’s largest population of the one-horned rhinoceros, and in December, Kaziranga transforms into a paradise. With pleasant temperatures and dry terrain, it’s ideal for jeep and elephant safaris.

5/11

Kanha National Park, Madhya Pradesh

Kanha is known for its thriving tiger and barasingha (swamp deer) population. December’s cool weather allows longer safari rides through open grasslands and dense sal forests. It’s also a great time to stay in eco-lodges and experience Madhya Pradesh’s famed jungle hospitality.

6/11

Gir National Park, Gujarat

The only home of the Asiatic lion, Gir offers a unique wildlife experience unlike anywhere else in India. In December, the temperatures are perfect for exploring the rugged landscape dotted with teak forests and water bodies. Apart from lions, visitors can spot leopards, nilgai, and hundreds of bird species.

7/11

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala

Nestled in the Western Ghats, Periyar is a lush, evergreen forest centered around the beautiful Periyar Lake. December’s cool weather enhances the experience of boat safaris, where you can spot elephants, bison, and even tigers near the water’s edge. The aroma of nearby spice plantations adds to the sensory charm of this sanctuary.

8/11

Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh

The park is known for having one of the highest densities of tigers in India. Bandhavgarh is a must-visit for wildlife photographers. The park’s open meadows and forested hills provide perfect conditions for sightings in December. Besides tigers, visitors can also spot leopards, sloth bears, and numerous bird species.

9/11

Sundarbans National Park, West Bengal

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Sundarbans is a fascinating mangrove ecosystem where the mighty Royal Bengal Tiger reigns. December’s pleasant weather and low humidity make it ideal for boat safaris through tidal creeks and dense forests. Saltwater crocodiles, water monitors, and migratory birds are also common sightings

10/11

Keoladeo National Park, Rajasthan

Also known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a paradise for birdwatchers. December is the peak of the migratory season when thousands of birds from Central Asia and Europe, including Siberian cranes, geese, and ducks, flock to its wetlands.

11/11

Nagarhole National Park, Karnataka

Nagarhole is a part of the larger Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, and boasts rich biodiversity, with tigers, elephants, gaurs, and leopards as some of the park’s main attractions. December is the perfect time to explore this national park because the month brings in cool mornings and vibrant foliage, right after monsoon. Nagarhole is very popular for leopard sightings, and also for birds that are endemic to the Western Ghats.
