Gothic brilliance

Gothic, a word that usually brings to mind dark, strange, and creepy elements, actually outdid itself when it came to architecture. Gothic architecture is grand, detailed, has elaborate designs, and is uniquely innovative. From the pointed arches on the outside of the structures, to the grand vaults on the inside, Gothic architecture has given the world some masterpieces.
Here are 6 famous structures that show the brilliance of Goth architecture.

2/7

Cologne Cathedral

The Cologne Cathedral in Germany is a masterpiece of High Gothic architecture and one of the most iconic cathedrals in Europe. Its construction began in 1248 and was completed in 1880 as it was halted for a while and it also had to see a World war. This cathedral is famous for its twin spires, each standing 157 metres tall, making it the tallest twin-spired church in the world.
The interior of the Cologne Cathedral is also impressive, with its vast nave and stunning stained glass windows that show biblical scenes and saints.

3/7

Milan Cathedral

The Cathedral Church of Milan is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the world. The construction for this Cathedral began in 1386 and continued for nearly six centuries. The exterior of the Cathedral is a mix of Gothic and other architectural styles and has a regal, palace-like look which can easily enchant people. Plus, the white colour, as opposed to the standard black shades of Gothic architecture add to its aura and charm.

4/7

Basilica of Saint-Denis

The Basilica of Saint-Denis is in France, and as compared to the above two, it is a rather simple style and example of Goth architecture. It was built in the 12th century, and was the first major structure to have key Gothic elements such as ribbed vaults and pointed arches. The Basilica has large, colourful stained glass windows and is also the burial place for many French kings and queens.

5/7

Notre Dame de Paris

The Notre Dame in Paris is another brilliant example of Gothic architecture. The cathedral's west side has three large portals, a rose window, and twin towers. The structure also has many sculptures inside for the aesthetics and stained glass works all around it. The designs on the glass are basically biblical scenes, characters, and the likes.

6/7

Notre-Dame de Reims

Notre-Dame de Reims is another outstanding example of Gothic architecture and the traditional site for the coronation of French kings. It is recorded that the construction of Notre-Dame de Reims began in 1211 and was completed in the 14th century. Right in the middle of two long towers is a beautiful circular structure which makes it look like there is a giant clock right in the middle. Inside, there are sculptures, statues, and like many other Goth structures stained glasses with pictures and carvings on them.

7/7

The Church of Our Lady

Another beautiful example of Gothic architecture from Germany is ‘The Church of Our Lady’. It is known for its twin towers topped with round domes, and is every bit regal and majestic. On the inside there are tall, slender columns that draw the audience/visitor’s eyes to the vaulted ceilings. And unlike many other Gothic structures, The Church of Our Lady has a plain exterior but an awe-inspiring interior.
