Renaissance art

The Renaissance era was one of the most beautiful and out-of-the-world revolutions in the arts arena. Be it unique painting techniques or flourishing artists like da Vinci and Sandro Botticelli, their artworks became much more appreciated, more famous, and of course, they had the creative freedom to try new things and subjects. Thus, the Renaissance era produced some of the most beautiful and iconic paintings. Here, we mention some of them.

‘Mona Lisa’ by Leonardo da Vinci

The ‘Mona Lisa’ is undoubtedly the most famous painting of the Renaissance era and in the world. Made by Leonardo da Vinci, it is believed to be the portrait of Lisa Gherardini and is also believed to have been commissioned by her husband. The painting has forever captivated the audience for its realism, be it in Lisa’s eyes or in her smile, and the use of sfumato by da Vinci, a technique that creates soft transitions between colours and tones, gives the whole creation a lifelike quality.

‘Arnolfini Wedding Portrait' by Jan van Eyck

One of the most beautiful paintings by van Eyck, ‘The Arnolfini Wedding Portrait’ is of a couple that looks happy and complete together. It is said to be of Giovanni Arnolfini, a wealthy merchant, and his wife in a private wedding ritual. In the painting one can see the wife’s ling, flowing dress with a beautiful green colour, the man’s stern yet calm expression, and a cute little dog standing in front of them. ‘St. Francis in Ecstasy’ by Giovanni Bellini

Giovanni Bellini’s ‘St. Francis in Ecstasy’ is a minimal painting with soft, serene elements and colours. It shows the St. Francis of Assisi in a moment of divine revelation and he can be seen standing in a rocky, sunlit space, surrounded by symbols of nature and faith. There are plants, animals, a small chapel, and the elements of nature and creation of life. (Image: confessions_of_an_art_nerd/Instagram)

5/7

‘The School of Athens’ by Raphael

One of the most beautiful fresco paintings is undoubtedly Raphael’s ‘The School of Athens’. It shows some of the most accomplished and iconic philosophers and thinkers of the era, Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, and Pythagoras, and even has Raphael in the background. The painting looks like it is set somewhere in ancient Rome as the structures behind are grand to say the least, and the main message of the painting was to show Plato and Aristotle’s thought as Plato can be seen pointing upwards in a way to talk about the divine while Aristotle points at the book, hinting towards knowledge and reality being supreme.

6/7

‘Sistine Madonna’ by Raphael

The ‘Sistine Madonna’ is another one of Raphael’s famous works, and this one has a rather soft, feminine quality to it. The painting is of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus and around her are Saints Sixtus and Barbara, and two Cherubs who are looking upwards onto Mary and Jesus. The ‘Sistine Madonna’ has soft colours, gentle expressions, minimal movement and drama, and just captivates the audience with its life-like beauty.

7/7

‘The Calling of St. Matthew’ by Caravaggio

One of the most famous paintings of a Biblical scene is Caravaggio’s ‘The Calling of St. Matthew’. This painting shows the moment when Jesus called Matthew, an ordinary tax collector, and Matthew followed him, his hands stretched wide. The painting is of a rather dim room but there is a beam of light in the direction Matthew is walking in which shows a divine sign. (Image: figueroafilms_bx/Instagram)
