Hindustani classical Gharanas

A gharana in classical music represents a distinct lineage-based tradition, often tied to a specific geographic region. It has a unique style, collection, improvisational approach, and interpretation of musical pieces. The term "Gharana" stems from the Hindi word "ghar," denoting a musical heritage passed through generations within a family or community. Each Gharana has specific techniques for handling ragas, taals and instruments. Founded by a notable musician or lineage, gharanas uphold a musical identity and are passed down through disciples, preserving and evolving the musical tradition.

Gwalior Gharana

The Gwalior Gharana is one of the oldest and most traditional schools of Hindustani classical music. It is proudly and widely said that even the children in Gwalior cry musically. The Gwalior Gharana emphasizes the purity of ragas and adheres to the traditional approach of 'gayaki' or singing style. Renowned for its simplicity and clarity, this Gharana played a significant role in shaping the fundamentals of Hindustani music.
Ustad Hassu Khan and Ustad Haddu Khan are attributed to be the Founders of the Gwalior Gharana.

Agra Gharana

The Agra Gharana is known for its rigorous training and the development of intricate ragas. They prioritize the cultivation of robustness and depth in vocalization, aiming for powerful and resonant notes. The style of singing in the Agra Gharana stands out for the rich depth in the voice, giving compositions a soulful touch and making them resonate strongly with the audience. The Agra Gharana is famous for using the non-tom alaap.

Kirana Gharana

In the Kirana style of singing, the main focus is on the ‘swar’ or individual notes. The Gharana emphasizes getting the notes exactly and expressing them well. In this style of singing, the notes of a melody are not just points on a scale; they are like separate worlds of music that can be explored and expanded. High-pitched emotional calls, known as ‘pukars,’ are a part of the musical expression. Another special aspect of this style is the elaborate and detailed use of musical patterns called ‘sargam taan.’ The most notable singers of this gharana are Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and Firoz Dastur.

Jaipur Gharana

The Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana is a well-known school of Hindustani classical music and was established by the famous musician Alladiya Khan. This gharana is famous for its unique way of singing called khayal, which focuses on adding detailed decorations and complex rhythms to the music. Khayal is a style in Hindustani classical music where musicians create different melodic variations while following a set musical structure. Besides khayal, this gharana also has a wide range of musical styles like thumri, dadra, and tappa in its collection.

6/6

Patiala Gharana

The Patiala Gharana is a unique style of singing that combines various vocal elements and is influenced by Punjab's folk music. This tradition is known for its creative improvisations, blending techniques from different gharanas to enhance khayal singing. The original thumri compositions of Ali Baksh Khan and Fateh Ali Khan were known for their fast-paced taans in the traditional Punjabi tappe folk style. The Patiala technique is characterized by its gentle approach, intricate vocal embellishments and a rich collection of bandishes, which are structured summaries of ragas.
