Artwork in Louvre

Musee du Louvre, or the Louvre museum as we know it, is one of the most beautiful museums in the world. It is known as the epitome of architectural brilliance and is home to some of the most famous and iconic paintings in the world. Be it da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, or Raphael’s depiction of the defeat of Satan, all of the iconic paintings call Louvre their home.
So, if you are visiting Louvre anytime soon, here are 5 paintings to be on the lookout for.

'The Mona Lisa' by Leonardo da Vinci

The top of the list in the most famous paintings at Louvre, Paris, is the Mona Lisa. This beautiful portrait of a lady named Lisa Gherardini has captured, enchanted, and mesmerised people for ages now.

In the painting, Lisa is seated with her hands on her lap and on her face is a mysterious, enigmatic smile that gives different messages to different people. She wears a simple, dark dress with a fine veil over her hair, and the background is painted in soft, muted tones of blues and greens.

'Oath of the Horatii' by Jacques-Louis David

Another famous painting that calls Louvre its home is the ‘Oath of the Horatii’. This painting is said to be a powerful representation of loyalty, sacrifice, and patriotism. It shows 3 brothers from the Horatii family, taking an oath to defend Rome, even at the cost of their lives. The painting is based on a Roman legend where the Horatii brothers agree to fight the Curiatii, champions from a rival city, to settle a dispute between the cities.

'The Wedding at Cana' by Paolo Veronese

The Wedding at Cana by Paolo Veronese is a canvas representation of a Biblical story where Jesus performed his first miracle. Legends say that it was at a wedding in Cana that Jesus was instructed by his mother to help the family, and so, with his disciples, he converted water into wine.

The painting background shows a lavish, Renaissance-style banquet hall, filled with guests. The table in front is filled with food and drink and people are talking to each other. And right in the centre of the painting is Jesus.

'Virgin of the Rocks' by Leonardo da Vinci

The Virgin of the Rocks is another masterpiece by Leonardo da Vinci. The painting shows Virgin Mary with little Jesus, John the Baptist, and an angel, all set within a rocky, cave-like landscape.
In this painting, Mother Mary is at the centre, with a calm expression on her face and her hand over John who is kneeling down for a prayer. Jesus, also a child, blesses John with his hand.
The background of the painting is dark and mysterious, which gives the painting a mystical touch.

St. Michael Vanquishing Satan was painted by Raphael in 1518, and is a dramatic painting that will put people in awe of the scene and the creation. It is the painting of the moment when archangel Michael defeats Satan, who is shown as a monstrous, fallen angel.
St. Michael is shown in the centre, standing above Satan with a sense of pride on his face, and Satan is on the bottom, defeated.
