Circle canvases

When we think about paintings and artworks, the first image to come to mind is of large canvases, square or rectangle in shape, with intense depictions to beautiful portraits. But, there are certain artworks, paintings and sculptures, that were done on circular structures, and they directed the viewer’s eyes straight to the main elements of the artwork, instead of the backgrounds or the bright colours.
From intense gazes to little cherubs, here we mention 5 artworks that were done on circular canvases. (Image: Canva AI)

‘Madonna della Seggiola’ by Raphael

‘Madonna della Seggiola’ by Raphael shows Madonna, a young mother, looking directly at the viewer, her audience. The clothes she is wearing are a rich red, blue, and green colour, and complementing them is a headgear. In her arms is her infant son, Jesus, and her eyes have been painted gentle and warm, full of grace. There is another baby-like character in the painting, sitting close to them, and looking at Madonna with the same grace. (Image: Canva)

‘Madonna of the Pomegranate’ by Sandro Botticelli

Another exceptional painting on a circular surface is this one. At the center of the painting is Madonna, with baby Jesus on her lap, angels around her, and a pomegranate in hand that baby Jesus is clutching onto. Some of the angels and side characters look intently towards baby Jesus and some others look straight at the viewer. The painting is done on a blue and golden background, which makes the elements pop through, and the somber expressions on the faces of everyone indicate a peaceful scene. ‘Madonna and Child with Cherubin’ by Andrea della Robbia

Unlike other artworks done on circular canvases, ‘Madonna and Child with Cherubin’ is a ceramic sculpture. With a smooth, glossy finish, and an artwork that looks like it is 3D, Robbia’s talent was simply unparalleled. It shows Madonna holding baby Jesus, with calm and composed expressions on her face, and they are surrounded on two sides by cheerful cherubs. The colours are simple blue and grey-white, with a rich blue background over which the sculpture is made. There are also golden highlights through the canvas that look distinct. ‘Madonna of the Magnificat’ by Sandro Botticelli

A bright, beautiful, and elaborate painting, done on a circular canvas is ‘Madonna of the Magnificat’. It shows Madonna writing something in a book, while baby Jesus holds her hand, almost like he is guiding her to write, and looks up into her eyes. In this artwork too, she is surrounded by angels, with two of them placing a golden crown on her head.
The colours are a mix of golden, yellow, blue, red, and the likes, and they are all bright and cheerful.

‘Medusa’ by Caravaggio

Another circular painting, Caravaggio’s ‘Medusa’ tells the tale of horror and fear. It is full of drama, extremely intense, and instead of being soft and subtle, has elements of scare in it. It shows the severed head of Medusa, the Gorgon girl whose gaze could turn people to stone, but here she was the one suffering as her head was cut off, blood spewing everywhere, and the snakes on her head proving to be useless.
Her face too is frozen in an expression of shock and horror, and her wide eyes and mouth tell a painful story. (Image: Caravaggio/Org)
