Best 'Surreal' paintings

The Surrealist movement, which came about in the early 20th century, brought to the limelight a way of artistic expression that challenged reality and got into the subjects and topics of the subconscious mind. From melting clocks to distorted faces and figures, everything in that genre was ‘surreal’ and seemed otherworldly. And between the many great works painted during that time, there are some that just hit the chord a little differently.
Here we list 5 best paintings from the ‘Surrealist’ period.

2/6

‘The Tilled Field’ by Joan Miro

Joan Miro's ‘The Tilled Field’ is a bright, bold, and whimsical painting of the subconscious. Filled with bold colours, abstract shapes, and playful lines, this painting takes viewers into a place where imagination is supreme. Miro's use of surreal elements, such as floating objects and distorted figures has made people pause, think and eventually embrace the irrational and the dreamlike. The placement of the many organic and geometric shapes creates a sense of harmony within chaos.

‘Mama, Papa is Wounded’ by Yves Tanguy

Yves Tanguy's ‘Mama, Papa is Wounded’ is considered to be a haunting depiction of an otherworldly land. With its barren area, eerie atmosphere, and weird-looking rock formations, this painting evokes a sense of existential unease. Tanguy's attention to detail and use of subtle shading create a sense of depth and perspective, inviting viewers into a world that is both familiar and alien. The title, ‘Mama, Papa is Wounded’ also adds a layer of intrigue, hinting at themes of family dynamics and emotional trauma.

‘The Persistence of Memory’ by Salvador Dali

Salvador Dali's ‘The Persistence of Memory’ is one of the most iconic paintings of the Surrealist movement. With the melting clocks almost flowing over surreal landscapes, this painting challenges the perceptions about time and reality. Dali's precise attention to detail and use of brushwork create a sense of hyperrealism, drawing viewers into a dreamlike state of the painting. The soft, almost ethereal imagery adds to the painting's sense of mystery and intrigue.

‘The Barbarians’ by Max Ernst

Max Ernst's ‘The Barbarians’ is a surreal masterpiece to say the least. With its fragmented figures, distorted forms, and the type of symbolism it holds, this painting invites viewers to think differently. Ernst's use of dark, and grey colours adds to the painting's sense of disorientation and chaos, creating a visual scene that is both intriguing and unsettling.
The title, ‘The Barbarians’, hints at violence and destruction, adding another layer of complexity to the work.

'Ulu's Pants' by Leonora Carrington

Very few women became a part of the Surrealist movement and one of them was the super proud and enigmatic Leonora Carrington. Her painting ‘Ulu's Pants’ is a surreal masterpiece that blends fantasy and reality. With its whimsical characters, well thought of details, and dreamy atmosphere, this painting is like a world of magic and mystery.
Carrington's use of the title, ‘Ulu's Pants’, adds a playful element to the painting, hinting at themes of identity and transformation.
