Controversial royal weddings around the world

Besides living a life of luxury and being bestowed upon with utmost respect and global recognition, royals around the world have to also handle the constant buzz that surrounds them at every point in their lives. Especially when it comes to royal weddings, from Queen Elizabeth II to Meghan Markle, every royal has had to grapple with their own set of controversial instances, as the whirring murmur that encircles amongst the public is widespread and rampant.

That being said, here are some of the royal scandals that are simply unforgettable and are spoken of up until today.

King Edward VIII abdicated the British throne to marry an American divorcee

In recent times, many royals have abdicated their throne or have stepped back from their royal duties in order to either marry the love of their lives or to lead a normal life. However, King Edward's abdication of the throne to marry an American divorcee, Wallis Simpson, not only shook the entire British monarchy but also changed the course of British succession, making it one of the biggest royal wedding scandals of all time.

Queen Elizabeth II's diamond tiara broke in two on her wedding day

When it comes to royal wedding disasters, even the Queen of England is not spared from it. Just two hours before the wedding, Queen Elizabeth II's diamond tiara broke in two halves. When her mother consoled her and suggested that she wore some other tiara, the Queen insisted to wear the same broken head piece. Thereafter, it was reported that the royal jeweller was summoned to wield the broken pieces back together.

During her vows, Princess Diana called Prince Charles by the wrong name

Well, Princess Diana's wedding was a centrepoint of many scandalous instances. From spilling an entire bottle of perfume on her wedding dress to calling her soon-to-be husband by the wrong name in her vows, Princess Diana experienced a series of controversial setbacks during her wedding.

Queen Beatrix of Netherland married an ex-Hitler Youth member

In 1966, when Queen Beatrix married the German diplomat, Claus von Amsberg, his background as an ex-member of the Hitler Youth club outraged the public to no extent. Reportedly, the Dutch people sent a petition of around 65,000 signatures to parliament to not grant permission for the marriage. However, this did not affect the couple at all and they went on to be married until Prince Claus' death in 2002.

Princess Charlene had attempted to flee a day before her wedding

As per reports, Princess Charlene of Monaco was crying throughout her wedding day on July 1, 2011. Allegedly the Princess had attempted to flee Monaco a day before her wedding after she uncovered that her soon-to-be husband, Prince Albert, already the father of two illegitimate children, had fathered a third love child during their five-year courtship.

Kate Middleton's wedding ring didn't fit

In 2011, when Kate Middleton was getting married to Prince William, it had been reported that the bride's ring did not fit her fingers. Reportedly, Kate had asked for the ring to be resized prior to the wedding as she was concerned about her pre-wedding weight loss. However, she did not re-check the size of the ring thereafter.

Queen Elizabeth did not attend Prince Charles' and Camilla's wedding

The relationship between Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles has always been a topic of controversy, even when the Prince's former wife, Princess Diana was alive. However, when Charles and Camilla decided to tie the knot, for many people, it was impossible to ignore the absence of Queen Elizabeth at the ceremony. Reportedly, she was putting her duties before family feelings.

Meghan Markle's wedding was attended by just one of her family members

One of the most recent royal wedding scandals involves the wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. Amongst the 600 people who attended the royal wedding of the two, only one was a part of the bride's family. Her mother, Doria Ragland, was the only person from Meghan's side who made it to the royal wedding.
