The Dhakkad boxer

Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) advanced to the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 by defeating German veteran Nadine Apetz. She prevailed the win with 3-2 over her rival. Due to the efforts of Lovlina, India became the first of nine strong teams to make it to the quarter-final stage. Here is everything you should know about Lovlina Borgohain.

From kickboxing to boxing

Lovlina Borgohain was born in the Golaghat district of Assam on 2nd October 1997. Having started her career as a kickboxer, she shifted to boxing later. Her father was a small-scale businessman and thus, struggled to fulfil her daughter's dreams. Though, Lovlina jumped onto the opportunity herself when the Sports Authority of India held trials at her school.

Training

After being selected by the Sports Authority of India, renowned Coach Padum Boro started training her in 2012. She started training at the Boxing Academy. After she progressed to the International stage, she was then trained by Shiv Singh, India's Chief Women Coach.

Achievements

Lovlina won a gold medal in the welterweight category at the inaugural India Open, an international boxing championship. She also won a bronze medal at the Asian Boxing Championships in Vietnam and also at the President's Cup held in Astana. Lovlina later won a silver medal at the Ulaanbaatar Cup in Mongolia and a bronze medal at the 13th International Silesian Championship in Poland. She also won a bronze medal at the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championship. She is also the first-ever sportswoman from Assam to qualify for the Olympics.

Yes, this happened!

Having been selected for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, Lovlina however had to face a little media intervention. The selection of hers was in news as it was found out that she did not receive any official intimation about her selection. She got to know about her selection through a local news channel.

Lovlina Borgohain was presented the Arjuna Award by President Ram Nath Kovind virtually for her outstanding performance in boxing.

Lovlina is currently single and not dating anyone. Even the past records suggest that she hasn't been involved with a partner at all.
