Mercury: Exploring the Solar System’s innermost planet; 7 fascinating facts!

Mercury is the innermost and smallest of the eight major planets in our Solar System, orbiting closest to the Sun. Though only slightly larger than Earth’s Moon, Mercury endures some of the most extreme conditions in the solar system - scorching daytime heat, freezing nights, a barren surface scarred by craters, and virtually no atmosphere. Yet it moves with phenomenal speed and reveals much about planetary formation and evolution. Here are seven facts about Mercury, according to NASA Science:

2/8

Nearest planet to the sun

Mercury circles the Sun at an average distance of about 58 million km (0.39 AU), making it the planet closest to the Sun. From that vantage, the Sun appears over three times larger than from Earth, and sunlight on Mercury is up to seven times brighter.

3/8

Smallest major planet

With a mean radius of roughly 2,440 km (about one-third of Earth’s), Mercury is only slightly larger than Earth’s Moon. Its small size and mass make Mercury the smallest of the eight primary planets. Nevertheless, despite its size, it holds many extremes in its orbit and surface conditions.

4/8

Extreme surface temperatures

Because Mercury is so close to the Sun and has virtually no atmosphere to retain heat, daytime temperatures can soar to about 430 °C (800 °F). Then at night (or in permanently shadowed regions), without atmospheric insulation, temperatures plunge as low as −180 °C (−290 °F).

5/8

The fastest orbiting planet

Mercury completes a full orbit around the Sun in just 88 Earth days, giving it the shortest “year” of all the planets. Its orbital speed reaches nearly 47 kilometers per second, faster than any other planet in the solar system.

6/8

Very long “days”

Although it rotates on its axis in about 59 Earth days, the combination of that slow spin with its orbital motion means that a full day-night cycle (sunrise to sunrise) on Mercury lasts about 176 Earth days. That’s nearly twice as long as its year.

7/8

No moons, no rings

Unlike many planets, Mercury does not have any natural satellites (moons) or ring structures. It is a solitary planet orbiting the Sun alone, which makes its dynamics simpler compared to moons-bearing planets.

8/8

Very dense and large metallic core

Mercury is the second-densest planet after Earth. Its density and internal structure reveal a massive, iron-rich core. The core occupies about 85% of Mercury’s radius - a much larger fraction than for other terrestrial planets - and may be partly molten.
