From Iriomote to Black-footed: 7 rare cat species across the planet

From mist‑shrouded islands to high mountain ridges, some wild cats remain among Earth’s most elusive and threatened predators. These feline species may not dominate headlines like lions or tigers, but their rarity and unique adaptations make them vitally important to biodiversity. Here are eight cat species which are among the rare species, across the planet, each with unique traits.

2/8

Iriomote cat (Prionailurus bengalensis iriomotensis)

Endemic to Japan’s tiny Iriomote Island, this cat inhabits just one location with fewer than 250 adults remaining. It thrives in subtropical forest and mangrove wetlands and is threatened by habitat loss, road accidents and hybridisation with domestic cats. The species’ extreme isolation and small numbers make it one of the most endangered felines on Earth.

3/8

Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis)

Found in the temperate forests of eastern Russia and northeast China, fewer than 120 mature individuals exist in the wild. Surviving in snowy climates, the Amur leopard has thick fur and large home ranges. Poaching, prey scarcity and habitat fragmentation remain top threats to its survival.

4/8

Arabian leopard (Panthera pardus nimr)

Once widespread across the Arabian Peninsula, this leopard’s numbers have dwindled to perhaps just around 100-120 individuals in Oman and Yemen. It survives in rugged mountainous terrain, facing threats from livestock conflict, illegal kills, and shrinking wild prey populations.

5/8

Andean mountain cat (Leopardus jacobita)

This high‑altitude small wild cat lives above 3,000 m in the Andes and is estimated to number fewer than 1,500 in the wild. Adapted to cold rocky terrain, the species faces prey decline, climate pressure, and mining encroachment in its fragmented range.

6/8

Flat‑headed cat (Prionailurus planiceps)

Native to wetlands of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo, this small wild cat has fewer than 2,500 adults surviving. With adaptations for aquatic hunting, it’s vulnerable to peat‑swamp drainage, river pollution and habitat destruction.

7/8

Rusty‑spotted cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus)

One of the smallest wild cats in the world, native to India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Though somewhat more widespread than other rare species, it remains elusive and threatened by habitat loss and human‑wildlife conflict.

8/8

Black‑footed cat (Felis nigripes)

Found in southern Africa’s arid savannahs, this small cat is the continent’s tiniest wild feline. Solitary and fiercely predatory for its size, it suffers from habitat degradation, poisoning and competition with domestic and feral predators.
