7 animals whose begin start with the letter V

The animal kingdom is rich with fascinating creatures, and several of them begin with the letter “V.” Although it is not the most common initial in animal names, these species range from birds and mammals to invertebrates and reptiles. Each animal has unique characteristics, adaptations, and roles in its ecosystem, reflecting the diversity of life on Earth. Here are some of the animals whose name starts with the letter V.

Vulture

Vultures are considered to be large birds of prey, which have a scavenging behavior in relation to carrion, or dead animal bodies. Through feeding on carcasses, vultures have an important function in an ecosystem in relation to controlling diseases. There are approximately 23 existing species of vultures in the world, most of which make use of soaring in search of food.

Vaquita

The vaquita, Phocoena sinus, is a porpoise species classified as the world's smallest and critically endangered species of porpoises. The species can be distinguished by dark patches beneath its eyes and lips. The species can be found in the Gulf of California in Mexico and is confined to this habitat. The species is critically endangered because of accidental fishing in illegal fishing nets.

Vampire Bat

Vampire bats are nocturnal mammals native to Central and South America. They have a unique behaviour in which they prefer hematophagy, which is feeding on other animals' blood. They do not share this characteristic with fruit bats since they possess specialised teeth and thermal sensors, which aid them in identifying where they can have access to warm-blooded prey. Although they have a macabre reputation, they do not lap very much blood.

Vicuña

The vicuña (Lama vicugna) is a wild South American camelid, closely related to both llamas and alpacas. The vicuñas are native to the Andes and have very soft wool. They were once a protected species under Inca rulers but have since become a symbol of Peru and can be found on its national emblem.

Viper

Vipers represent a group of venomous snakes with a characteristic lengthened and hollowed-out fang and potent venom to immobilise their prey. Vipers have geographic distribution all over the world and are characterised by their triangular head and specialised heat receptors (these heat receptors are only present in pit vipers), which aid in locating warm-blooded animals. Examples of famous viper species include pit vipers and Russell’s viper.

Velvet Worm

Velvet worms belong to the phylum Onychophora. They represent rather unusual invertebrates with soft bodies and a large number of short feet. They are known as ‘living fossils.’ They prefer tropical, damp habitats. They hunt their prey by ejecting glue-like secretions from glands. They are very ancient creatures and have always fascinated biologists.

Vinaceous Dove

The vinaceous dove (Streptopelia vinacea) is a small species of bird which is native to sub-Saharan regions of Africa. They are identifiable by their soft grayish-brown feathers, which have a distinct ‘vinaceous’ hue. They are found in dry woodlands and savannas where they search for food in the form of seeds and grains. They are identifiable by their ‘cooing noises.’ It is considered to be in the status of 'Near Threatened' by IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).

Ranging from soaring scroungers and small sea mammals to ancient invertebrates and deadly snakes, animals that start with ‘V’ have amazing biological diversity. Every species has developed distinct qualities to help them survive in their respective environments, which may include the skies, oceans, forests, deserts, or high mountains. Studying these animals can help us in understanding the biological richness of our Earth and why it is vital to conserve them for the future generations.
