5 Common bathroom items that could be spreading disease in your home

The bathroom is undeniably the most comforting space of the house, where we go to clean ourselves and revive the slackening energy after a long, hectic day. While we often keep an eye on regular cleanliness and hygiene, there are certain small things that we often overlook, and that’s where germs breed and make any bathroom a germ-dense room. This is because the bathroom is usually warm and humid and has moisture that works as the perfect place for such germs, bacteria, fungi and viruses to grow. Well, if you have not cleaned your bathroom things in a while, you might be sharing your space with more than your family. Here are five common things in the bathroom that could be making you sick.

2/6

The Toothbrush Holder

We do not usually think about where the water goes when we rinse our toothbrushes. Most toothbrush holders are dark, warm and wet, which is a place for mold and bad bacteria to grow. If your toothbrush holder is near the toilet, it can also get particles from the toilet when you flush. To fix this you should wash your toothbrush holder every week in the dishwasher or with hot soapy water. It is also very important to close the toilet lid before you flush.

3/6

The Showerhead

You might think the water in the showerhead keeps it clean. It is actually a place where bacteria can grow. The showerhead can have a buildup of bacteria, which can make you sick when you breathe it in. To clean the showerhead, you can soak it in vinegar once a month.

4/6

Reusable Hand Towels

A shared hand towel is like a dish for bacteria. When multiple people use the towel, they are leaving behind moisture and bacteria. The towel can have bacteria like E. coli, which can survive for days. You should change the hand towel every day. Make sure it dries completely between uses.

5/6

Bathroom Floor Mats

We step on the bathroom floor mats with feet but we often leave them wet for hours. The mats can get dusty and moldy, which can cause problems like athlete's foot. Because they do not dry completely, the underside of the mat can get moldy, which can affect the air in your home. You should wash your bathroom floor mats every week in water. If you want an option, you can use a wooden or stone mat that dries faster.

6/6

Loofahs and Bath Sponges

The loofah in your shower might seem like a thing but it could actually be making you sick. The loofah can trap skin cells and when it is left in a warm shower, those cells can become food for bad bacteria. If you shave and then use a loofah, you are putting bacteria right into your skin. You should replace your loofah every month or switch to a washcloth that you can wash in hot water after every use.
