Who came first?

While the question of ‘Who came first, Egg or Hen’ remains largely unanswered, the question of who came first, man or woman is pretty much mentioned in all ancient scriptures. And while the legends and characters vary, there are definitive answers given by elders, experts, and religious texts as to who came first in which religion.

Here we mention the first humans on Earth, as per different religious beliefs.

2/6

Hinduism

Hinduism is one of the oldest religions in the world, and has a rather simple definition of who was the first man on Earth. According to the Brahma Purana and other ancient scriptures, the first humans on Earth were Manu and Shatarupa.
Manu is believed to be the one who led humanity forward, along with Shatarupa and was also the first king of Earth. Shatarupa, his wife, is considered to be the mother of all humans and the daughter of Brahma. Hindu scriptures say that Manu and Shatarupa were created by the gods to populate the earth after a flood.

3/6

Islam

In Islam, the first humans are believed to be Adam and Hawwa. According to the Quran, Allah created Adam from clay and breathed life into him, making him the first human. Hawwa was then created from one of Adam's ribs to be his companion and stay with him for eternity, but this has no mention in the Quran. They lived in the ‘Adam ka garden’ until they disobeyed Allah's command not to eat grains of wheat and were misled by Iblees into eating them. When they disobeyed, they were expelled from paradise and sent to Earth, where they became the ancestors of all humanity.

4/6

Christianity

Christianity also identifies Adam and Eve as the first humans and according to the Book of Genesis, the story of their creation by God happened in the Garden of Eden. Adam was formed from dust, and Eve was created from one of Adam's ribs and they lived in paradise until they ate the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, which they were tempted to do by a snake. This led to their expulsion from the garden and Adam and Eve's disobedience, became the original sin.

5/6

Tao

Taoism is an ancient Chinese philosophy and religion that has a very abstract perspective on how humanity came into being. According to Tao beliefs, the universe emerged from the Tao, the most powerful and primordial force. In Taoism, humans are seen as a part of this cosmic process, and evolved alongside nature and the universe. While they dont have the name of a specific human like other religions, they do emphasise the interconnectedness of all life.

6/6

Norse

Norse beliefs talk about the story and names of the first humans who populated the Earth. According to Norse legends, the first humans on Earth were Askr and Embla.
In the Prose Edda, a collection of Old Norse legends, Askr and Embla are described as the first man and woman created by the gods Odin, Vili, and Ve from two trees that they found on their walk in the beach. It is said that Odin gave them life, Vili gave them intelligence and emotions, and Ve gave them sense and speech. Askr and Embla became the ancestors of humanity and lived in Midgard, the area of humans, which was created from the body of the giant Ymir.
