What is Kumbh Mela?

Kumbh Mela, the largest peaceful spiritual gathering in the world, is often hailed as one of the most energetic and spiritually charged fairs ever. It is a celebration of faith, religion, the soul, and of course, devotion. Millions of devotees rush to Prayagraj and other locations in hopes of freeing their souls from the cycle of birth and death and attaining liberation from the evils the material world holds. The legends say that when Lord Vishnu took the pot of Amrit away from the Asuras (demons), 4 drops of Amrit fell in 4 different locations, and those cities now host the Kumbh melas.

Types of Kumbh

In 2025, the world will witness the grandeur of the Maha Kumbh mela, a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence, and many reports say that officials are expecting over 40 crore people to attend the Mahakumbh in 2025.
But, apart from the Mahakumbh, there are 3 more types of Kumbh, each happening in a certain time frame, certain locations, and different planetary alignments.

3/8

The Magh Mela

Magh Mela is an annual event held at Prayagraj during the month of Magh, or the days between January and February in the Gregorian calendar. Although not officially called a Kumbh Mela, the Magh Mela does become a precursor to the larger gatherings. Devotees gather at the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers, and take a ritualistic dip in the rivers and offer prayers to the Gods and Goddesses.

4/8

Ardh Kumbh

The Ardh Kumbh Mela is celebrated and observed once in 6 years, and this one takes place in Ha and Prayagraj. ‘Ardh’ means half, and thus this one is positioned between two ‘Purna Kumbhs’. The Ardh Kumbh Mela is a large-scale gathering that prepares devotees for the Purna Kumbh, and the last Ardh Kumbh was observed in 2019 in Prayagraj.

5/8

Purna Kumbh

The Purna Kumbh Mela occurs once every 12 years and can be in any of the 4 sacred locations - Haridwar, Prayagraj, Nashik, or Ujjain. The date and timing of the Purna Kumbh is decided by the position of Jupiter in relation to the Sun and Moon. The Purna Kumbh is a celebration of the complete cycle of Jupiter around the sun.

6/8

Maha Kumbh 2025

The Maha Kumbh Mela is the most powerful and rarest of all Kumbh gatherings. It is said that planetary alignments of the Mahakumbh come only once every 144 years, and only after 12 Purna Kumbh is one Mahakumbh celebrated. The sheer years and wait that devotees have to do to celebrate the Mahakumbh makes it an extraordinary event filled with devotional energies.

7/8

The most powerful Kumbh Mela

Although every Kumbh mela has its own importance and power, for some people, the Purna Kumbh and Mahakumbh are the treasures of energy. The rarity, scale, and celestial significance of the Maha Kumbh Mela make it a once-in-a-lifetime event for most devotees. In fact, many are not even able to witness it even once in their life, as the whopping 144 year time is a feat no one can achieve.

Kumbh 2025

The Mahakumbh 2025 is going to witness one of the largest spiritual gatherings ever, and will be graced by people from all over the world and with all possible religions, classes, and ethnicities. From Steve Jobs's wife who has donned the name of Kamala and will be staying in Kalpavas to the others who will visit with friends and families for the Shahi snan, this sure will be a spectacle to behold.

Such sponsored articles spread false notions and attract the gullible pilgrims ultimately to waste their time and money over a simple ritual that they could well perform at their own town or village.
