Navratri 2025: Goddess Durga has arrived on an elephant, and will depart on a human this year; this is what it means

Each year during Navratri, the devotees not only look forward to the festivities dedicated in honour of Goddess Durga but also towards the vahan on which she arrives and leaves. The vahan, or transport, is seen to be a divine pointer of the energies and destiny of the new year. Goddess Durga is said to arrive on an elephant (gaja vahan) and depart on a human (manav vahan) in 2025. Each of these symbols hold some particular meaning as per the Hindu scriptures. This is said to offer powerful insights into what the upcoming year may bring in terms of nature, society, and human consciousness. Since Navratri in 2025 started on a Monday, Maa Durga is said to arrive on an elephant (according to Drik Panchang)

Elephant symbolizes power, prosperity, and stability. Goddess Durga's coming on an elephant is considered a very auspicious sign. This means that the year can be one of growth and prosperity. It portends good crops, positive rains, and well-being overall for society. Elephant also symbolizes political stability and equilibrium. Elephants move in herds, that indicates clear leadership, this also hints at strong governance and collective progress in the world. It is also a traditional belief that the year Goddess Durga comes on an elephant, it rains heavily.

Departure on a human

Goddess Durga's depature on a human (manav vahan) during Navratri is considered deeply symbolic. As per popular beliefs Maa Durga's depature on a human has two variations, some see it as a cautionary sign while others view it as positive and empowering. It suggets that the coming time holds a promise of peace, prosperity and good fortune. The departure on a human is her urging to the society to act in wisdom, compassion and integrity.

What this means for the year 2025

Together, the elephant arrival and human departure indicate a year of huge potential with a sense of caution. As per beliefs the first half guarantees abundance and possibilities, but the latter half demands attention and cautious action. The symbols remind individuals that prosperity is not guaranteed. It is based on how conscientiously people and society utilize the resources and possibilities bestowed upon them.

Spiritual significance

Aside from material interpretations, the symbolism also conveys a spiritual message. Goddess Durga's arrival is a reminder to believers that life is about balance between receiving blessings and accountability. The vehicle of departure underscores the fact that human effort and willpower are needed to sustain the good fortune that has been given. This year, devotees are urged to emphasize both gratitude and purposeful action.
