The benefits of OM chanting

OM, a sound that vibrates and reverberates through people, one that instantly puts you at ease and calm, and one that is said to be the ‘Beej mantra’ of the creation of the Universe. The chant and sound of OM comes before every powerful mantra, sometimes also after the mantra, and it sets the right tone for spirituality, for power, and for meditative spirit. OM is a vibration and a frequency that is present everywhere within the universe and within our bodies.
And here we mention 7 ways in which OM changes and rewires people from within.

2/9

Sense of inner harmony

The sound of OM is basically three syllables AUM, which when pronounced together, result in a deep vibration inside your vocal chords, and your body at large. When you take a deep breath in and start with the ‘AUM’ or ‘OM’ chant, an energy spreads through your body, and you experience a tingling sensation through your hands, head, face, and even in your fingers. As your mind focuses on the OM, a sense of inner harmony consumes you.

3/9

Positive vibrations all through

Everything in the universe works and operates at a certain frequency. Be it our bodies, our thoughts, our mind, or even our rhythms. And the chant of OM emits a frequency which is believed to be in tune with the natural vibration and energy of the universe.
When we chant OM, these positive vibrations help remove any negative energy from around us, calm the anxious thoughts, and spread a sense of peace.

4/9

Deepens your connection with divine

OM is considered a sacred sound in many traditions. While some might think it is just the Hindus who chant OM, but in reality, even Buddhists have mantras that start with the divine vibration on OM. And thus it is referred to as the sound of the universe, and the echo of creation itself. And so naturally, chanting OM is believed to align people to the higher consciousness, making them feel more connected to the divine or a greater power beyond themselves.

5/9

Helps enter a meditative state

For some people, meditation can be challenging, especially in the beginning. And as people struggle to control their thoughts and one after the other situations and conversations of the mind keep pouring in, OM helps reach a meditative state. Chanting OM before or during meditation helps guide the mind into a relaxed state, and the rhythm that forms in the mind and body helps you stay aligned.

6/9

Helps regulate blood pressure

Several studies have shown and proven that chanting OM can have positive effects on the nervous system, which controls body functions like heart rate and blood pressure. The deep breathing involved in chanting OM slows down the heart rate, relaxes the

body and mind, and reduces hypertension.
According to a paper titled ‘Effect of om chanting and yoga nidra on blood pressure and lipid profile in hypertension – A randomized controlled trial’, “The current study demonstrates the efficacy of Om chanting and Yoga nidra in reducing blood pressure and improving lipid profiles in patients with HTN. These particular yoga interventions could thus be considered a safer form of complementary therapy in the management of HTN, alongside conventional management.”

7/9

Balances the chakras

Chakras are the energy channels or ‘Nadis’ of the human body, and there are 7 chakras in every human. These influences our physical health, mental health, and more, and an imbalance in these chakras could result in low confidence, negative emotions, and even irritability with some behaviours.
And it is said that as each syllable of OM vibrates through the body, it aligns and balances these energy centers. From the Muladhara to the Sahasrara, every Chakra is believed to stay in balance with regular OM chants and positive energy.

8/9

Reduces everyday stress

Stress is an everyday friend of people today, and distractions just tag along. But even in this, OM chanting is believed to help. When chanting OM, the mind naturally shifts into a more present and alert state and the vibrations spread a sense of calm and focus into the body and mind.
As the energy of the chant spreads through you, the vibrations remove any excess stressors, just like a single drop of soap distances the germs.

9/9

A better realisation from within

A lot of people's personal experiences with regular OM chanting point to a common chord - a better realisation of things from within. While reducing stress, anxiety, and spreading a sense of calm through the body is a common trait too, people also say that chanting OM helps them be in sync with the powers of the Universe, and align with the energies around them which in turn helps them realise things better, about life and more.
