Resilient characters from Hindu texts

Ancient Hindu texts and scriptures are filled with inspiring characters whose lives have taught us great lessons. From the ones who fought against all odds to conquer an enemy kingdom to the ones who stayed at home praying for everybody's protection and their victory, the texts give us profound lessons about life, challenges and how to face and overcome those challenges.

Here we list the 5 most inspiring and resilient characters from Hindu mythology and the profound lessons they teach us.

2/6

Mata Sita

Mata Sita is believed to be the absolute epitome of grace and resilience. She is known for her unwavering loyalty and strength during times of trial, first when she was sent into exile and then when she was kidnapped by the Demon king Ravana. A woman from a royal family, destined to be the princess, but then married and then sent away into exile.
Despite being unjustly banished to the forest with her husband, Lord Rama, she remained steadfast in her love and devotion. Mata Sita's resilience teaches us the importance of remaining true to our values and principles, even in the face of hardships. Her unwavering faith in righteousness and her belief in her values are a reminder and lesson to many about being steadfast on your values.

3/6

Urmila

One of the most neglected and underrated characters of the Ramayana, but also someone who gave lessons of resilience is Urmila. She is an often overlooked but equally resilient character who gave lessons on patience and sacrifice. When Lakshmana went into exile with Lord Rama, Urmila stayed back and patiently waited for him to return.

Urmila's selfless acts of letting Lakshmana go away without her and then waiting for him all the while, highlights how devoted she was not just to her husband but also the values of family she was expected to stick to. Her story and life teaches us the value of selflessness and the importance of supporting our loved ones, even at great personal cost.

4/6

Hanuman ji

Lord Hanuman, the devoted disciple of Lord Rama, was one of the most resilient, strong hearted and courageous characters in the Ramayana. His unwavering devotion towards Lord Rama and his mission is one to remember forever. According to texts and scriptures, Lord Hanuman made a legendary leap across the ocean to reach Lanka in search of Mata Sita because his Lord, Shri Rama was extremely worried about her. Plus, the anecdote of Lord Hanuman applying ‘sindoor’ all over his body for Lord Rama’s longevity, tells a lot about his devotion. Hanuman ji’s resilience teaches us the power of faith in overcoming obstacles and his dedication inspires people to channel their energies in the right direction and towards the right cause.

5/6

Karna

‘Surya putra Karna’, as he is usually referred to, is one of the most tragic but resilient characters from the Mahabharata. Karna, after being abandoned by his mother Kunti, was adopted by a humble charioteer. But, being the son of the Sun god himself, he was endowed with unparalleled skill and valour. Being raised by a charioteer, Karna faced discrimination and ridicule throughout his life. Despite facing numerous challenges and betrayals, Karna remained steadfast in his principles and upheld his sense of honour until the very end. Karna's story in the Mahabharata teaches us the importance of perseverance and integrity, even in the face of overwhelming odds.

6/6

Eklavya

Eklavya is another Mahabharata character known for his resilience and determination. When Eklavya was denied the opportunity to learn archery under Guru Dronacharya due to his caste, he displayed remarkable resilience by teaching himself the art of archery in the forest, using a statue of Guru Drona. His unwavering dedication towards archery and his zeal to master it made him an expert archer in no time, even better than Arjuna himself. Unfortunately, later he had to sacrifice his thumb to Guru Dronacharya who did not want Eklavya to outperform Arjuna.
Eklavya's story teaches us the importance of perseverance and self-reliance during times of adversity. His determination helped him overcome the barriers society had set for him.
