Mantras for Lord Shiva

In Hinduism, Shiva is considered to be both the creator and the destroyer of the universe. He is the only deity who is responsible for both destruction and transformation. It is said that Lord Shiva is ‘Bholenath’ because of his pure, pious, and sacred nature. And dedicated to him are a plethora of hymns and mantras that people chant for spiritual purposes, positivity, abundance, protection, and much more.
Here we list 5 easy and powerful Shiva mantras that every devotee should recite for clarity, power, and purpose.

Shiva Gayatri mantra

Mantra - Om Tatpurushaya Vidmahe, Mahadevaya Dhimahi, Tanno Rudrah Prachodayat.
The Shiva Gayatri Mantra is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and is a variation of the traditional Gayatri mantra. In this one, devotees relate to Lord Shiva as the name to meditate upon rather than Maa Gayatri. Chanting the Shiva Gayatri Mantra with sincerity is believed to give the devotee spiritual insight, wisdom, and inner transformation. It helps them better realise their true purpose, align themselves with the universe’s energy, and guides them on the right path which can eventually help in self-realisation.

3/7

Om Namo Bhagavate Rudraya

The Shiva-Rudra mantra comes in the form of ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Rudraya’. This mantra is like calling an avatar of Lord Shiva, the fierce Lord Rudra. Lord Rudra is seen as a symbol of destruction and force and is the one who removes negativity and obstacles from the devotee’s path. This mantra is like a declaration of surrender to the supreme energy represented by Shiva and Rudra.
Chanting this mantra with sincerity and devotion helps a person have protection from evil forces and guides them toward spiritual evolution.

4/7

Mahamrityunjaya Mantra

Mantra - Om Tryambakam Yajamahe, Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam, Urvarukamiva Bandhanan, Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat
The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is a call to Lord Shiva to remove the fear of death and suffering from a person’s mind. It is often chanted to seek protection from illness, accidents, and untimely death.
The Mahamrityunjay mantra is also known as the ‘Mrita-Sanjivini’ mantra, and is believed to give the blessings of vitality and rejuvenation to the devotee. By chanting the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra with faith, people can experience the divine healing energy of Lord Shiva, and be free from the fear of the cycle of birth and death.

5/7

Om Namah Shivaya

One of the best and easiest mantras to chant for Lord Shiva is ‘Om Namah Shivaay’. It is simple and powerful and means - ‘I bow down to Lord Shiva’. Starting with the sound of ‘OM’, the primordial sound of the universe, a devotee submits himself to Lord Shiva and his divine energy and grace.
Reciting this mantra sincerely and with an undivided focus helps purify the mind, body, and soul. It is said that people who chant this mantra 108 times every day are much more welcoming of the cosmic energies and the chant serves as a reminder of the connection to the divine. By chanting ‘Om Namah Shivaya’, a devotee seeks the blessings of Lord Shiva for inner peace, strength, and liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

6/7

Shivoham Shivoham

The simple chant of ‘Shivoham Shivoham’ is the essence of the world and the philosophies that govern Hindu beliefs. This simple word and chant is said to be the ultimate truth of one's identity with the supreme Lord Shiva. ‘Shivoham’ translates to ‘I am Shiva’.
Now, this mantra is not of overconfidence or envy that a person is trying to equate themselves to Shiva, but rather, an indication that Lord Shiva is in everyone. Reciting this mantra is said to be a powerful practice of self-realisation, and continued chanting of Shivoham makes people feel one with Lord Shiva.

7/7

Har Har Mahadev

Not a mantra but rather a chant that is so famous and simple that even a little kid can speak it.

Har Har Mahadev simply translates to - 'Har' which defines Shiva's role as the destroyer of ignorance and illusion, and 'Mahadev' is the symbol of his supreme and grand nature. This chant invokes Shiva's powerful energy, that is believed to bring blessings, protection, and spiritual upliftment in the devotee's life. It is recited to overcome obstacles, purify the mind, and help in spiritual transformation. 'Har Har Mahadev' is the essence of the eternal cycle of creation, preservation, and dissolution in the universe.
