How to deal with communication fatigue while working from home

Working from home has been quite a sought-after perk for some employees. But there are times when frequent online meetings and not being able to disconnect from the job puts employees under pressure and constant stress. This is called communication fatigue. Companies across the globe have chosen work from home as a model to ensure safety of their employees. But continual communication with professionals has led people to feel drained out. Hence, you must know of ways to identify virtual communication fatigue in order to keep performing your level best.

2/6

Time off

Since work and home have become the same space due to the lockdown, it has tempted employees to schedule meetings one after the other. However, doing so causes fatigue earlier than you even expect. And if you think coffee is your hack to fix this feeling, it shouldn't be and it isn't. To combat virtual communication fatigue, you need to schedule breaks throughout the day. This will help you recharge before the next meeting. Allow yourself some virtual time off and spend this time eating, having conversations with your family or simply resting it out.

3/6

Set deadlines

When you keep scheduling back to back meetings, you wouldn't want to indulge in small talks like "How is everyone doing?" or "How is the lockdown treating everybody?" You'd rather talk business and get done with it. That's exactly what you have to do, consciously. Give yourself a deadline for each work call and try to finish everything important in that time-frame so that you can get done with it sooner than later. This will majorly help with communication fatigue.

4/6

Block your front camera view

Honestly, it's exhausting to keep showing your face at each meeting or conference call with your team members. This can give you a lot of stress and fatigue as you keep stressing your eyes on the laptop and phone screens. To prevent this, you can simply turn off the camera feature whenever you're not presenting or not expected to talk. Closing the self-view will reduce a lot of stress as well as communication fatigue that comes along with it.

5/6

Don't deal with notifications

Every employee knows that their work notifications can keep overloading. This also will have some unfavourable effects on employees. You aren't necessarily expected to respond to each message that you receive throughout the day. To make sure your phone doesn't keep ringing all the time, strategize with your team members to only chat on workgroups if there's something quick and short to be done. Everything that requires thinking and debating can be done over work emails. This way, you won't be overloaded with work notifications all the time.

6/6

Disconnect post working hours

Since majority of companies have moved to work from home, employees have been putting extra hours every day. This has led to frequent burnouts and stress. More working hours also mean more interaction with colleagues, which ultimately results in communication fatigue. To prevent this, start managing your time well. If you have a 9-5 job, make sure you only work from 9 am to 5 pm. Don't keep extending your work hours just because you feel more work can be done. Get into a habit of disconnecting from work world once you're done with your working hours.
