From Bill Gates to Elon Musk: 5 common habits of highly successful billionaires

What makes billionaires successful?

It is often said that one's daily habits have a profound effect on one's success in life, and rightly so. Our habits often shape us into the person we become in the long run. Similarly, successful billionaires like Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and others have distinct patterns in their habits that set them apart from others. While luck and opportunity play a role, their daily practices, decision-making approaches, and resilience have been key to their success. If you too, want to be successful like them, then here we share some of their common habits that you can follow:

2/6

Lifelong learning

One of the most common habits among most billionaires is their eagerness to learn. Be it Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Elon Musk, or Jeff Bezos-- they all are known to be voracious readers. Bill Gates reads roughly 50 books a year, while Warren Buffett spends 80% of his day reading. Elon Musk, who is largely self-taught in rocket science, also credits books for much of his knowledge. Reading has many benefits-- like expanding one's knowledge, thinking, creativity, and enhancing decision-making.

3/6

Taking calculated risks

Successful billionaires don’t shy away from taking calculated risks in life. For example, Jeff Bezos took a huge risk when he left his stable job to start Amazon, but he assessed the market potential before taking a leap of faith. Similarly, Elon Musk is known for taking risks by implementing different work ethics at his companies. In the case of his companies, Tesla and SpaceX, Musk took a risk of investing nearly all his money into the companies at a time when they were on the brink of failure. So, one can learn to step out of their comfort zone if they want extraordinary success in life.

4/6

Work ethics and discipline

Success doesn’t come to any without relentless effort. And successful billionaires are known for their incredible work ethic. While Elon Musk is known to work around 80-100 hours a week to push his companies forward, Bill Gates, too, spent his years working tirelessly in Microsoft during its early days. While work-life balance is important, successful people often prioritise their goals above everything else, ensuring they outwork and outperform others. They are focused, hardworking, disciplined, and resilient-- qualities that make them stand apart from others.

5/6

Resilience and learning from mistakes

For most people, achieving success is not a straight graph. Making mistakes and failure are inevitable parts of success; however, what matters most is how you bounce back and stay committed to your goal. Billionaires understand this better than anyone, and that's what makes them so successful. For instance, Steve Jobs was once fired from Apple, only to return stronger and revolutionise the tech industry. Elon Musk’s early SpaceX launches were failures, but with consistent efforts and improvisation, it achieved historic success. Successful billionaires don't let their failures define them. Instead, they learn from their mistakes and move on in life.

6/6

Thinking big

Instead of focusing on short-term goals, successful billionaires make long-term plans and work on them. For example, Elon Musk envisions a future where humans colonise Mars, Jeff Bezos aims to expand beyond Earth with Blue Origin, and Bill Gates continues to tackle global health challenges through his philanthropic work. These billionaires know that long-term goals and patience are the keys to success.
