5 common habits and traits of people who grew up in low-income families

How money shapes us

It is often said that our childhood and early-year experiences play an important role in shaping us into the adults we become later in life, and rightly so. For instance, children who were pampered a lot turn into adults who feel too entitled about everything in life. Similarly, people who have a humble upbringing have certain habits and traits that make them stand apart from the rest. Here we share some of them:

2/6

They are conscious about their spending habits

People who had humble beginnings grew up seeing how their parents worked hard and saved money to raise a family. And so, they have learnt to be cautious about spending unnecessarily from early on in life. As adults, they often have a set budget for everything and they believe in the power of saving in the long run. They are quite responsible and resourceful when it comes to money, and they handle their finances quite well.

3/6

They value experiences more than material possessions

Instead of spending on luxurious items or having a lavish lifestyle, people who had humble beginnings in life prefer to value diverse experiences more. These would be spending quality time with loved ones, going on a trek, watching a good movie together at home, etc. For them, having a happy and healthy family or loved ones is the true luxury in life and rightly so. They also have more appreciation and value of relationships and experiences than those who grew up in worldly riches.

4/6

Such adults are more responsible in all aspects of life

People who have grown up in low-income families might have often helped their parents or siblings either with work or contributing financially from an early age. This makes them more responsible as a person, from early on in life. This sense of responsibility also transcends all aspects of their life-- be it their personal or professional life. For instance, a study which was published in the Journal of Poverty concluded that people who were raised in low-income families have a higher chance of being employed and working for longer hours as compared to others who came from more financially stable families.

5/6

They are more resilient in life

Children who have grown up in low-income families might have seen or experienced the harsh realities of life very early on in life-- be it financial issues at home or unable to get certain things or help in life due to money issues. However, such experiences add to their overall personality and over time, make them more resilient towards challenges in life. Such adults also keep cool under pressure, and rather than dwelling upon what's not working in their favour, they focus on working hard and focusing on their goals.

6/6

They value and appreciate the simple joys of life more

People who grew up in low-income families value and appreciate the simple joys of life more than others-- like spending quality time with loved ones, spending time in nature, or having healthy meals at home. They have learnt early on in life that true wealth in life is not about possessing expensive items but about being happy and content regardless of what challenges life throws at you.
