5 different types of Gouramis to add to your home aquarium

Gouramis are one of the most popular freshwater fish that are easy to keep in aquarium. Gouramis are beautiful, have stunning colours, have peaceful personalities (most of them), and easy adaptability-- which makes them easy for fishkeepers. These fish are native to Asia; they are labyrinth fish as they can breathe atmospheric air, which makes them unique and hardy pets. However, there are different types of Gouramis, and each breed has their own needs. Here we list some of them:

2/6

Dwarf Gourami

Dwarf Gouramis, as the name suggests, are smaller version of Gourami. They are brightly coloured fish mainly in vibrant blues, reds, and oranges that add a pop of colour to your aquariums. Dwarf Gouramis are generally peaceful i nature, but males of this species can be mildly territorial. They can either be kept standlone or in a community tank with other peaceful fishes, ample space, and hiding spots. With their manageable size and beauty, they’re a great choice for beginners and small aquarium setups.

3/6

Pearl Gourami

Pearl Gouramis, as thier name suggests, have small shimmering, pearl-like spots on their bodies. These fish have a gentle temperament and they can growing up to 5 inches in length. They can fit perfectly in community aquariums with other calm fish species. These gouramis prefer slightly acidic to neutral water conditions. Males have beautiful reddish-orange throats, especially during breeding. Give them a varied diet of flakes, pellets, vegetables, and live foods to keep them healthy and vibrant.

4/6

Kissing Gourami

Kissing Gouramis are known for their unique “kissing” behaviour, which are actually a display of dominance, not affection, with other fish of their own kind. They are medium-to-large size fish and can grow up to 12 inches long, so they need spacious tanks to swim freely. They prefer warm, slightly acidic water with sturdy plants, as they sometimes nibble on vegetation. Their diet should include vegetables, algae wafers, and protein-based foods. These fish are semi-aggressive and should be kept with similar-sized tankmates.

Three-Spot Gourami

One of the most common Gouramis are the three-spot gouramis, which aminly come in striking blue or gold colouration. These fish are hardy and can growing up to 6 inches in length. They are generally peaceful but may show territorial behaviour towards fish of their own kind. And so, they should either be kept alone or with other peaceful fish in a community tank. Also, since these gouramis adapt well to a wide range of water conditions, they are perfect for beginner aquarists.

6/6

Honey Gourami

Honey Gouramis are smaller, gentler cousins of the Dwarf Gourami, with soft golden hues-- and hence the name. They stay under 2 inches, making them perfect for smaller tanks. These fish have peaceful temperament, and they’re excellent community fish. Honey Gouramis like well-planted tanks with calm waters. They should be given flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods. Males develop brighter colors during breeding, adding charm to their already delicate beauty. Their low maintenance needs, gentle personality, and appealing looks make Honey Gouramis a favourite among many beginner fishkeepers.
