All you need to know about maintaining a hamster

Are you planning to get a Chinese or a dwarf hamster? Make sure you know these facts before you get one because handling them is different from taking care of other pets like dogs and cats.

2/9

They are babies that will never grow

Hamsters are just like dogs. They are babies that will never grow in size. You have to always be gentle with them, handle them carefully and they can bite as per their temperament. Also, never give them to someone with small hands, they feel safe only if they are fitting into someone’s hand.

3/9

You have to feed them from a dish

You cannot give them treats and expect them to eat from your hand without getting bitten. So, you have to always feed them from a dish and keep it clean all the time.

4/9

They don’t eat leftovers

Like us humans and dogs and some cats, hamsters are not leftover food-friendly. They hate it! You have to pour their food in a dish on a daily basis and you cannot afford to let that food sit in their bowl for long hours because they will not touch it if it is not fresh.

5/9

Change their bedding, cage weekly

Their bedding needs to be changed every month and their cage has to be spic and span on a weekly basis. You have to get rid of the feces and the pee smell is nauseating. You won’t be able to stand it so do you think your tiny hamster can?

6/9

Chill with their grooming

This is one major plus point when it comes to hamsters. These little fur balls groom themselves once a day. You do not need to comb them, bathe them unless there is some special requirement suggested by the vet.

7/9

Bedding material

Their bed cannot be of those fancy cotton sheets and pillows just to look cute for your Instagram account. Hamsters can survive on bedding made of natural materials only. It could be made of orchard grass, hay etc.

8/9

They prefer chew toys

Get them loads of chew toys because that keeps their teeth occupied. Otherwise, they will chew down their cage or enclosure. There are many options available online or instores so nothing to worry about here.

9/9

Their short lifespan

The most painful fact that you need to know before getting a hamster is that they live for 2-3 years only, on an average.
