Labrador vs German Shepherd

When it comes to choosing the right pet dog for guarding purpose, Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherds often top the list of popular breeds— but for very different reasons. While both Labrador and German Shepherd are highly intelligent, loyal, and easy to train, the two dog breeds have different nature and strengths which sets them apart. For instance: Labs are known for their friendly and people-pleasing nature, while German Shepherds are famous for their protective instincts and discipline. So, which one makes the better guard dog? Here we list some important differences between the two popular pet dog breeds that will give you a fair idea of the m and help you pick the right breed as per your requirements:

2/6

Protective instinct

While both Labs and German Shephers are loyal and protective of their humans, German Shepherds naturally have a strong guarding instinct. German Shepherds were origially bred for herding and protection, which makes them highly alert to strangers, unfamiliar sounds or movements. They quickly sense danger and won’t hesitate to act on their instinct.
On the other hand, Labs are more sociable and friendly. Because of their people-pleasing nature they may even greet strangers with enthusiasm rather than suspicion at first. While they may bark, they’re more likely to simply warn rather than confront. If you’re looking for a dog that takes guarding seriously, then German Shepherds are better than Labs in this matter.

3/6

Trainability

Both Labs and German Shepherds are highly intelligent which makes them easy to train. But when you compare the two, then German Shepherds are more obedient, quick learners, and they respond well to strict training-- that's one of the reasons why they are often used in police and military work.
Meanwhile, Labradors are also smart and eager to please-- this quality makes them easy to train, especially with positive reinforcement and by giving treats. But they can be a bit more playful and less focused than German Shepherds when it comes to serious security training situations.

4/6

Temperament

Labradors are friendly, loving, easy-going, and great with families with kids and other pets.
German Shepherds are loyal but comparatively more reserved. While they are more alert and cautious around strangers, with their humans and families they are known to form deep bonds. Their serious nature makes them more suitable for dedicated guarding tasks without being overly aggressive.

5/6

Energy levels and exercise

Both the dog breeds-- Labs and German Shepherds--are active and love being outdoors. But considering their built, German Shepherds need intense mental and physical stimulation to stay active, healthy and happy. German Shepherds are love challenges and structured routines.
Meanwhile, Labs are high-energy and they enjoy physical activities and playtime. They need regular exercise, but sometimes even a simple walk with their humans is enough to keep them happy as compared to German Shepherds who need more intense workouts.

6/6

Looks

With their pointed ears and muscular build, German Shepherds look more intimidating. While, Labs look friendlier and are less likely to be seen as threatening, especially to strangers.
